Zusammenfassung: | The Parthenon and Liberal Education seeks to restore the study of mathematics to its original place of prominence in the liberal arts. To build this case, Geoff Lehman and Michael Weinman turn to Philolaus, a near contemporary of Socrates. The authors demonstrate the influence of his work involving number theory, astronomy, and harmonics on Plato's Republic and Timaeus, and outline its resonance with the program of study in the early Academy and with the architecture of the Parthenon. Lehman and Weinman argue that the Parthenon can be seen as the foremost embodiment of the practical working through of mathematical knowledge in its time, serving as a mediator between the early reception of Ancient Near-Eastern mathematical ideas and their integration into Greek thought as a form of liberal education, as the latter came to be defined by Plato and his followers. With its Doric architecture characterized by symmetria (commensurability) and harmonia (harmony; joining together), concepts explored contemporaneously by Philolaus, the Parthenon engages dialectical thought in ways that are of enduring relevance for the project of liberal education. |

With its Doric architecture characterized by symmetria (commensurability) and harmonia (harmony; joining together), concepts explored contemporaneously by Philolaus, the Parthenon engages dialectical thought in ways that are of enduring relevance for the project of liberal education.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="600" ind1="0" ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Philolaus,</subfield><subfield code="c">of Croton,</subfield><subfield code="d">approximately 470 B.C.-</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n92047005</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="600" ind1="0" ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Plato.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n79139459</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="610" ind1="2" ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Parthenon (Athens, Greece)</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85098340</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="610" ind1="2" ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Parthénon (Athènes, Grèce)</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="600" ind1="0" ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Philolaus,</subfield><subfield code="c">of Croton,</subfield><subfield code="d">approximately 470 B.C.-</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="600" ind1="0" ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Plato</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="610" ind1="2" ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Parthenon (Athens, Greece)</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Mathematics</subfield><subfield code="x">History.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Philosophy, Ancient.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85100861</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Mathématiques</subfield><subfield code="x">Histoire.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Philosophie ancienne.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">PHILOSOPHY</subfield><subfield code="x">History & Surveys</subfield><subfield code="x">Ancient & Classical.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Mathematics</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Philosophy, Ancient</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="655" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Electronic books.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="655" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">History</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="700" ind1="1" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Weinman, Michael,</subfield><subfield code="e">author.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n2006079613</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="758" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="i">has work:</subfield><subfield code="a">The Parthenon and liberal education (Text)</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PCGxXgbQfvhkRMygHMgtPcd</subfield><subfield code="4">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/ontology/hasWork</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="776" ind1="0" ind2="8"><subfield code="i">Print version:</subfield><subfield code="a">Lehman, Geoff, 1971-</subfield><subfield code="t">Parthenon and liberal education.</subfield><subfield code="d">Albany, NY : State University of New York, 2018</subfield><subfield code="z">9781438468419</subfield><subfield code="w">(DLC) 2017013762</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="830" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">SUNY series in ancient Greek philosophy.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n86712383</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="856" ind1="1" ind2=" "><subfield code="l">FWS01</subfield><subfield code="p">ZDB-4-EBA</subfield><subfield code="q">FWS_PDA_EBA</subfield><subfield code="u">https://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site&db=nlebk&AN=1726727</subfield><subfield code="3">Volltext</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="856" ind1="1" ind2=" "><subfield code="l">CBO01</subfield><subfield code="p">ZDB-4-EBA</subfield><subfield code="q">FWS_PDA_EBA</subfield><subfield code="u">https://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site&db=nlebk&AN=1726727</subfield><subfield code="3">Volltext</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">De Gruyter</subfield><subfield code="b">DEGR</subfield><subfield code="n">9781438468433</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">EBL - Description based on online resource; title from digital title page (viewed on February 15, 2019). The Parthenon and Liberal Education seeks to restore the study of mathematics to its original place of prominence in the liberal arts.
