Zusammenfassung: | The first book about Albatross Press, a Penguin precursor that entered into an uneasy relationship with the Nazi regime to keep Anglo-American literature alive under fascism. The Albatross Press was, from its beginnings in 1932, a "strange bird": a cultural outsider to the Third Reich but an economic insider. It was funded by British-Jewish interests. Its director was rumored to work for British intelligence. A precursor to Penguin, it distributed both middlebrow fiction and works by edgier modernist authors such as D.H. Lawrence, Virginia Woolf, James Joyce, and Ernest Hemingway to eager continental readers. Yet Albatross printed and sold its paperbacks in English from the heart of Hitler's Reich. In her original and skillfully researched history, Michele K. Troy reveals how the Nazi regime tolerated Albatross-for both economic and propaganda gains-and how Albatross exploited its insider position to keep Anglo-American books alive under fascism. In so doing, Troy exposes the contradictions in Nazi censorship while offering an engaging detective story, a history, a nuanced analysis of men and motives, and a cautionary tale. |

In her original and skillfully researched history, Michele K. Troy reveals how the Nazi regime tolerated Albatross-for both economic and propaganda gains-and how Albatross exploited its insider position to keep Anglo-American books alive under fascism. In so doing, Troy exposes the contradictions in Nazi censorship while offering an engaging detective story, a history, a nuanced analysis of men and motives, and a cautionary tale.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="610" ind1="2" ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Albatross Verlag</subfield><subfield code="x">History.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="610" ind1="2" ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Albatross Verlag</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="610" ind1="2" ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Albatross Verlag</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Publishers and publishing</subfield><subfield code="z">Germany</subfield><subfield code="x">History</subfield><subfield code="y">20th century.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">LANGUAGE ARTS & DISCIPLINES</subfield><subfield code="x">Journalism.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">HISTORY</subfield><subfield code="x">Modern</subfield><subfield code="y">20th Century.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Publishers and publishing</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Germany</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PBJtCD3rcKcPDx6FHmjvrbd</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Drittes Reich</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield><subfield code="0">http://d-nb.info/gnd/4013021-6</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Englisch</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield><subfield code="0">http://d-nb.info/gnd/4014777-0</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Literatur</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Kulturpolitik</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield><subfield code="0">http://d-nb.info/gnd/4033581-1</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="648" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">1900-1999</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="655" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">History</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="776" ind1="0" ind2="8"><subfield code="i">Print version:</subfield><subfield code="a">Troy, Michele K.</subfield><subfield code="t">Strange Bird : The Albatross Press and the Third Reich.</subfield><subfield code="d">Cumberland : Yale University Press, ©2017</subfield><subfield code="z">9780300215687</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="830" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">New directions in narrative history.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/no2011002638</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="856" ind1="4" ind2="0"><subfield code="l">FWS01</subfield><subfield code="p">ZDB-4-EBA</subfield><subfield code="q">FWS_PDA_EBA</subfield><subfield code="u">https://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site&db=nlebk&AN=1494431</subfield><subfield code="3">Volltext</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">EBL - Ebook Library</subfield><subfield code="b">EBLB</subfield><subfield code="n">EBL4832368</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">EBSCOhost</subfield><subfield code="b">EBSC</subfield><subfield code="n">1494431</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">ProQuest MyiLibrary Digital eBook Collection</subfield><subfield code="b">IDEB</subfield><subfield code="n">cis37901074</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">YBP Library Services</subfield><subfield code="b">YANK</subfield><subfield code="n">13277232</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="994" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">92</subfield><subfield code="b">GEBAY</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="912" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">ZDB-4-EBA</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="049" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">DE-863</subfield></datafield></record></collection> |

The first book about Albatross Press, a Penguin precursor that entered into an uneasy relationship with the Nazi regime to keep Anglo-American literature alive under fascism.
