Zusammenfassung: | Mental illness is many things at once: It is a natural phenomenon that is also shaped by society and culture. It is biological but also behavioral and social. Mental illness is a problem of both the brain and the mind, and this ambiguity presents a challenge for those who seek to accurately classify psychiatric disorders. The leading resource we have for doing so is the American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual, but no edition of the manual has provided a decisive solution, and all have created controversy. In The Diagnostic System, the sociologist Jason Schnittker looks at the multiple actors involved in crafting the DSM and the many interests that the manual hopes to serve. Is the DSM the best tool for defining mental illness? Can we insure against a misleading approach? Schnittker shows that the classification of psychiatric disorders is best understood within the context of a system that involves diverse parties with differing interests. The public wants a better understanding of personal suffering. Mental-health professionals seek reliable and treatable diagnostic categories. Scientists want definitions that correspond as closely as possible to nature. Everyone seeks definitive insight into what they regard as the right target. Yet even the best classification system cannot satisfy all of these interests simultaneously. Progress toward an ideal is difficult, and revisions to diagnostic criteria often serve the interests of one group at the expense of another. |

Progress toward an ideal is difficult, and revisions to diagnostic criteria often serve the interests of one group at the expense of another.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="588" ind1="0" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Print version record.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="546" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">In English.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="630" ind1="0" ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/no2007150927</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="630" ind1="0" ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Mental illness</subfield><subfield code="x">Diagnosis.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85083646</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Psychodiagnostics.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85108427</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1="1" ind2="2"><subfield code="a">Mental Disorders</subfield><subfield code="x">classification</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1="1" ind2="2"><subfield code="a">Mental Disorders</subfield><subfield code="x">diagnosis</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1="2" ind2="2"><subfield code="a">Psychiatry</subfield><subfield code="x">history</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1="2" ind2="2"><subfield code="a">History, 20th Century</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1="2" ind2="2"><subfield code="a">History, 21st Century</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="2"><subfield code="a">United States</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Maladies mentales</subfield><subfield code="x">Diagnostic.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Psychodiagnostics.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Médecine</subfield><subfield code="x">Histoire</subfield><subfield code="y">20e siècle.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Médecine</subfield><subfield code="x">Histoire</subfield><subfield code="y">21e siècle.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">PSYCHOLOGY</subfield><subfield code="x">Research & Methodology.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Mental illness</subfield><subfield code="x">Diagnosis</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Psychodiagnostics</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="758" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="i">has work:</subfield><subfield code="a">The diagnostic system (Text)</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PCFVP3jXXC8Q4wGvXDw7Vwd</subfield><subfield code="4">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/ontology/hasWork</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="776" ind1="0" ind2="8"><subfield code="i">Print version:</subfield><subfield code="a">Schnittker, Jason.</subfield><subfield code="t">Diagnostic system.</subfield><subfield code="d">New York : Columbia University Press, [2017]</subfield><subfield code="z">9780231178068</subfield><subfield code="w">(DLC) 2016056249</subfield><subfield code="w">(OCoLC)965804813</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="856" ind1="1" ind2=" "><subfield code="l">FWS01</subfield><subfield code="p">ZDB-4-EBA</subfield><subfield code="q">FWS_PDA_EBA</subfield><subfield code="u">https://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site&db=nlebk&AN=1628771</subfield><subfield code="3">Volltext</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="856" ind1="1" ind2=" "><subfield code="l">CBO01</subfield><subfield code="p">ZDB-4-EBA</subfield><subfield code="q">FWS_PDA_EBA</subfield><subfield code="u">https://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site&db=nlebk&AN=1628771</subfield><subfield code="3">Volltext</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Digitalia Publishing</subfield><subfield code="b">DGIT</subfield><subfield code="n">DIGCOLUP0636</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">De Gruyter</subfield><subfield code="b">DEGR</subfield><subfield code="n">9780231544597</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">EBL -
