Zusammenfassung: | In 1963, President John F. Kennedy described sweeping new programs to replace "the shabby treatment of the many millions of the mentally disabled in custodial institutions" with treatment in community mental health centers. This movement, later referred to as "deinstitutionalization," continues to impact mental health care. Fifty years after Kennedy's speech, the author provides an inside perspective on the birth of the federal mental health program. He draws on his own first-hand account of the creation and launch of the program, extensive research, one-on-one interviews with major figures involved in the legislation, and recently unearthed audiotapes of interviews with major figures involved the legislation. As such, this book provides historical material previously unavailable to the public. He also examines the political maneuverings required to pass the legislation, the Kennedys' involvement in the policy and that of other major players, the responsibility of the state versus the federal government in caring for the mentally ill, and how closing institutions has ultimately resulted not in better care, but in underfunded programs, neglect, and higher rates of community violence. In this book the author presents an account of the history and present day failings of our mental health treatment system. As he argues, it is imperative to understand how we got here in order to move forward towards providing better psychatric care for the most vulnerable. -- From book jacket |

-- From book jacket</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="588" ind1="0" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Print version record.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="546" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">English.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Mentally ill</subfield><subfield code="x">Care</subfield><subfield code="z">United States</subfield><subfield code="x">History.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Mentally ill</subfield><subfield code="x">Services for</subfield><subfield code="z">United States.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Mental health policy</subfield><subfield code="z">United States.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Mental health services</subfield><subfield code="z">United States</subfield><subfield code="x">Evaluation.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Mentally ill women.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh92001695</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1="1" ind2="2"><subfield code="a">Mental Health Services</subfield><subfield code="x">history</subfield><subfield code="0">https://id.nlm.nih.gov/mesh/D008605Q000266</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1="2" ind2="2"><subfield code="a">Government Programs</subfield><subfield code="0">https://id.nlm.nih.gov/mesh/D006078</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1="2" ind2="2"><subfield code="a">History, 20th Century</subfield><subfield code="0">https://id.nlm.nih.gov/mesh/D049673</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1="2" ind2="2"><subfield code="a">History, 21st Century</subfield><subfield code="0">https://id.nlm.nih.gov/mesh/D049674</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1="2" ind2="2"><subfield code="a">Mentally Ill Persons</subfield><subfield code="0">https://id.nlm.nih.gov/mesh/D028642</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="2"><subfield code="a">United States</subfield><subfield code="0">https://id.nlm.nih.gov/mesh/D014481</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Personnes vivant avec un trouble de santé mentale</subfield><subfield code="x">Soins</subfield><subfield code="z">États-Unis</subfield><subfield code="x">Histoire.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Personnes vivant avec un trouble de santé mentale</subfield><subfield code="x">Services</subfield><subfield code="z">États-Unis.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Santé mentale</subfield><subfield code="x">Politique gouvernementale</subfield><subfield code="z">États-Unis.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Médecine</subfield><subfield code="x">Histoire</subfield><subfield code="y">20e siècle.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Médecine</subfield><subfield code="x">Histoire</subfield><subfield code="y">21e siècle.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Femmes vivant avec un trouble de santé mentale.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">mentally ill.</subfield><subfield code="2">aat</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">HEALTH & FITNESS</subfield><subfield code="x">Diseases</subfield><subfield code="x">Nervous System (incl. Fuller Torrey, MD. Oxford : Oxford University Press, [2014] 1 online resource (x, 204 pages) text txt rdacontent computer c rdamedia online resource cr rdacarrier data file Bibliography Includes bibliographical references and index. Joe Kennedy : a man with problems -- Robert Felix : a man with plans -- The birth of the federal mental health program: 1960-1963 -- The short, unhappy life of the federal mental health program: 1964-1970 -- The death of the federal mental health program: 1971-1980 -- The perfect storm: 1981-1999 -- Dimensions of the current disaster: 2000-2013 -- Solutions : what have we learned and what should we do? In 1963, President John F. -- From book jacket Print version record.
