Zusammenfassung: | The author's search for truth as early American settlers knew it began as a child: the old songs, handed-down stories, and proverbs that colored her world compelled her on a journey that informs her depiction of the Cumberland River Valley in Kentucky and Tennessee. The author drew from court records, wills, inventories, early newspapers, and unpublished manuscripts to write Seedtime on the Cumberland, which chronicles the movement of settlers away from the coast, as well as their continual refinement of the art of pioneering. A companion piece, this history covers the same era, 1780-1803, from the first settlement in what was known as Middle Tennessee to the Louisiana Purchase. When Middle Tennessee was the American frontier, the men and women who settled there struggled for survival, land, and human dignity. The society they built in their new home reflected these accomplishments, vulnerabilities, and ambitions, at a time when America was experiencing great political, industrial, and social upheaval. |

The society they built in their new home reflected these accomplishments, vulnerabilities, and ambitions, at a time when America was experiencing great political, industrial, and social upheaval.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Frontier and pioneer life</subfield><subfield code="z">Cumberland River Valley (Ky. and Tenn.)</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Cumberland River Valley (Ky. and Tenn.)</subfield><subfield code="x">History.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Cumberland River Valley (Ky. and Tenn.)</subfield><subfield code="x">Social life and customs.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Cumberland, Vallée de la (Kent. et Tenn.)</subfield><subfield code="x">Histoire.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Cumberland, Vallée de la (Kent. et Tenn.)</subfield><subfield code="x">Murs et coutumes.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">SOCIAL SCIENCE</subfield><subfield code="x">Anthropology</subfield><subfield code="x">Cultural.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Frontier and pioneer life</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Manners and customs</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">United States</subfield><subfield code="z">Cumberland River Valley</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="655" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">History</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="758" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="i">has work:</subfield><subfield code="a">Flowering of the Cumberland (Text)</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PCGCRjGHYrfPCjkvJRpDykC</subfield><subfield code="4">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/ontology/hasWork</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="776" ind1="0" ind2="8"><subfield code="i">Print version:</subfield><subfield code="a">Arnow, Harriette Louisa Simpson, 1908-1986.</subfield><subfield code="t">Flowering of the Cumberland.</subfield><subfield code="d">East Lansing : Michigan State University Press, 2013</subfield><subfield code="w">(DLC) 2012050885</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="830" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">JSTOR EBA.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="856" ind1="4" ind2="0"><subfield code="l">FWS01</subfield><subfield code="p">ZDB-4-EBA</subfield><subfield code="q">FWS_PDA_EBA</subfield><subfield code="u">https://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site&db=nlebk&AN=1040521</subfield><subfield code="3">Volltext</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Askews and Holts Library Services</subfield><subfield code="b">ASKH</subfield><subfield code="n">AH28100068</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Askews and Holts Library Services</subfield><subfield code="b">ASKH</subfield><subfield code="n">AH28077966</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">ProQuest Ebook Central</subfield><subfield code="b">EBLB</subfield><subfield code="n">EBL1810033</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">ebrary</subfield><subfield code="b">EBRY</subfield><subfield code="n">ebr10674870</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">EBSCOhost</subfield><subfield code="b">EBSC</subfield><subfield code="n">1040521</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Project MUSE</subfield><subfield code="b">MUSE</subfield><subfield code="n">muse20048</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">YBP Library Services</subfield><subfield code="b">YANK</subfield><subfield code="n">10374538</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="994" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">92</subfield><subfield code="b">GEBAY</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="912" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">ZDB-4-EBA</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="049" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">DE-863</subfield></datafield></record></collection> |

With new introduction. Includes bibliographical references and index. Introduction / Sandra L. Ballard -- Author's Introduction and Acknowledgments -- The Siege of Buchanan's -- The Underpinning -- The Most Important Crop -- The Makeup of Society -- The Sounds of Humankind -- Intellectual Background and Education -- The Horse -- Cows and Other Farm Animals -- The Farmer and His Crops -- Industry -- The Professions -- The Business World -- River, Road, and Town -- Social Life and Diversions -- Epilogue. The author's search for truth as early American settlers knew it began as a child: the old songs, handed-down stories, and proverbs that colored her world compelled her on a journey that informs her depiction of the Cumberland River Valley in Kentucky and Tennessee.
