Zusammenfassung: | "Taking on what one former U.S. ambassador called "the last ghost of the Vietnam War," this book examines the far-reaching impact of Agent Orange, the most infamous of the dioxin-contaminated herbicides used by American forces in Southeast Asia. Edwin A. Martini's aim is not simply to reconstruct the history of the "chemical war" but to investigate the ongoing controversy over the short- and long-term effects of weaponized defoliants on the environment of Vietnam, on the civilian population, and on the troops who fought on both sides. Beginning in the early 1960s, when Agent Orange was first deployed in Vietnam, Martini follows the story across geographical and disciplinary boundaries, looking for answers to a host of still unresolved questions. What did chemical manufacturers and American policymakers know about the effects of dioxin on human beings, and when did they know it? How much do scientists and doctors know even today? Should the use of Agent Orange be considered a form of chemical warfare? What can, and should, be done for U.S. veterans, Vietnamese victims, and others around the world who believe they have medical problems caused by Agent Orange? Martini draws on military records, government reports, scientific research, visits to contaminated sites, and interviews to disentangle conflicting claims and evaluate often ambiguous evidence. He shows that the impact of Agent Orange has been global in its reach affecting individuals and communities in New Zealand, Australia, Korea, and Canada as well as Vietnam and the United States. Yet for all the answers it provides, this book also reveals how much uncertainty - scientific, medical, legal, and political - continues to surround the legacy of Agent Orange."--Project Muse. |

Yet for all the answers it provides, this book also reveals how much uncertainty - scientific, medical, legal, and political - continues to surround the legacy of Agent Orange."--Project Muse.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="504" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Includes bibliographical references and index.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="588" ind1="0" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Print version record.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Veterans</subfield><subfield code="x">Diseases</subfield><subfield code="z">Australia.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Veterans</subfield><subfield code="x">Diseases</subfield><subfield code="z">United States.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Agent Orange</subfield><subfield code="x">Environmental aspects.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Agent Orange</subfield><subfield code="x">Toxicology.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Agent Orange</subfield><subfield code="x">War use.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Vietnam War, 1961-1975</subfield><subfield code="x">Chemical warfare.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh86001504</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Agent Orange</subfield><subfield code="x">Aspect de l'environnement.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Agent Orange</subfield><subfield code="x">Toxicologie.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Agent Orange</subfield><subfield code="x">Utilisation militaire.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">SOCIAL SCIENCE</subfield><subfield code="x">General.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Agent Orange</subfield><subfield code="x">Toxicology</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Agent Orange</subfield><subfield code="x">War use</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Chemical warfare</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Veterans</subfield><subfield code="x">Diseases</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Australia</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39QbtfRv8PPH7gCqhkJ8DK8bM</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">United States</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PBJtxgQXMWqmjMjjwXRHgrq</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="647" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Vietnam War</subfield><subfield code="d">(1961-1975)</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39Qhp4vB9HVwcPb3whDTtrg7b</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="648" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">1961-1975</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="776" ind1="0" ind2="8"><subfield code="i">Print version:</subfield><subfield code="a">Martini, Edwin A., 1975-</subfield><subfield code="t">Agent Orange.</subfield><subfield code="d">Amherst, MA : University of Massachusetts Press, ©2012</subfield><subfield code="w">(DLC) 2012028716</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="830" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Culture, politics, and the Cold War.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n96105837</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="856" ind1="4" ind2="0"><subfield code="l">FWS01</subfield><subfield code="p">ZDB-4-EBA</subfield><subfield code="q">FWS_PDA_EBA</subfield><subfield code="u">https://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site&db=nlebk&AN=1245436</subfield><subfield code="3">Volltext</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Askews and Holts Library Services</subfield><subfield code="b">ASKH</subfield><subfield code="n">BDZ0029237678</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">EBL - Martini. "Taking on what one former U.S. ambassador called "the last ghost of the Vietnam War," this book examines the far-reaching impact of Agent Orange, the most infamous of the dioxin-contaminated herbicides used by American forces in Southeast Asia.
