Zusammenfassung: | Between the deaths of the Emperors Julian (363) and Justinian (565), the Roman Empire underwent momentous changes. Most obviously, control of the west was lost to barbarian groups during the fifth century, and although parts were recovered by Justinian, the empire's centre of gravity shifted irrevocably to the east, with its focal point now the city of Constantinople. Equally important was the increasing dominance of Christianity not only in religious life, but also in politics, society and culture. Doug Lee charts these and other significant developments which contributed to the transformation of ancient Rome and its empire into Byzantium and the early medieval west. By emphasising the resilience of the east during late antiquity and the continuing vitality of urban life and the economy, this volume offers an alternative perspective to the traditional paradigm of decline and fall. Key features: ́⁰Ø Provides a clear analytical narrative of pivotal political, military, and religious developments ́⁰Ø Complements this with an examination of overarching trends in urban life and the economy ́⁰Ø Gives particular attention to the dynamics of political and religious power and of Roman-barbarian relations during the fifth century |

Key features: ́⁰Ø Provides a clear analytical narrative of pivotal political, military, and religious developments ́⁰Ø Complements this with an examination of overarching trends in urban life and the economy ́⁰Ø Gives particular attention to the dynamics of political and religious power and of Roman-barbarian relations during the fifth century</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="546" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">English.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="506" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Access restricted to Kwantlen Polytechnic University students, faculty and staff.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Rome</subfield><subfield code="x">History</subfield><subfield code="y">Empire, 284-476.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85115160</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Byzantine Empire</subfield><subfield code="x">History</subfield><subfield code="y">Justinian I, 527-565.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85018487</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Rome</subfield><subfield code="x">Histoire</subfield><subfield code="y">284-476 (Bas-Empire)</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Empire byzantin</subfield><subfield code="x">Histoire</subfield><subfield code="y">527-565 (Justinien Ier)</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">HISTORY</subfield><subfield code="x">Ancient</subfield><subfield code="z">Rome.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Byzantine Empire</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Rome (Empire)</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Römisches Reich</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield><subfield code="0">http://d-nb.info/gnd/4076778-4</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Byzantinisches Reich</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Romeinse rijk.</subfield><subfield code="2">gtt</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Byzantijnse rijk.</subfield><subfield code="2">gtt</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Regions & Countries -
