Zusammenfassung: | This compelling ethnography explores the issue of cultural continuity and change as it has unfolded in the representative Guatemala Mayan town Santiago Atitlán. Drawing on multiple sources, Robert S. Carlsen argues that local Mayan culture survived the Spanish Conquest remarkably intact and continued to play a defining role for much of the following five centuries. He also shows how the twentieth-century consolidation of the Guatemalan state steadily eroded the capacity of the local Mayas to adapt to change and ultimately caused some factions to reject-even demonize-their own history and culture. At the same time, he explains how, after a decade of military occupation known as la violencia, Santiago Atitlán stood up in unity to the Guatemalan Army in 1990 and forced it to leave town. This new edition looks at how Santiago Atitlán has fared since the expulsion of the army. Carlsen explains that, initially, there was hope that the renewed unity that had served the town so well would continue. He argues that such hopes have been undermined by multiple sources, often with bizarre outcomes. Among the factors he examines are the impact of transnational crime, particularly gangs with ties to Los Angeles; the rise of vigilantism and its relation to renewed religious factionalism; the related brutal murders of followers of the traditional Mayan religion; and the apocalyptic fervor underlying these events. |

He argues that such hopes have been undermined by multiple sources, often with bizarre outcomes. Among the factors he examines are the impact of transnational crime, particularly gangs with ties to Los Angeles; the rise of vigilantism and its relation to renewed religious factionalism; the related brutal murders of followers of the traditional Mayan religion; and the apocalyptic fervor underlying these events.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Tzutuhil Indians</subfield><subfield code="x">Social conditions.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Tzutuhil philosophy.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh96008609</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Tzutuhil Indians</subfield><subfield code="x">Religion.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Social change</subfield><subfield code="z">Guatemala</subfield><subfield code="z">Santiago Atitlán.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Santiago Atitlán (Guatemala)</subfield><subfield code="v">Folklore.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Santiago Atitlán (Guatemala)</subfield><subfield code="x">Politics and government.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Santiago Atitlán (Guatemala)</subfield><subfield code="x">Social life and customs.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Tzutuhil</subfield><subfield code="x">Conditions sociales.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Philosophie tzutuhil.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Tzutuhil</subfield><subfield code="x">Religion.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">HISTORY</subfield><subfield code="z">Latin America</subfield><subfield code="z">Central America.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">SOCIAL SCIENCE</subfield><subfield code="x">Anthropology</subfield><subfield code="x">Cultural.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Manners and customs</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Politics and government</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Social change</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Tzutuhil Indians</subfield><subfield code="x">Religion</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Tzutuhil Indians</subfield><subfield code="x">Social conditions</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Tzutuhil philosophy</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Guatemala</subfield><subfield code="z">Santiago Atitlán</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39QbtfRBgY3rVvttt9FcFvhxc</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="655" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Folklore</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="700" ind1="1" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Prechtel, Martín.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="700" ind1="1" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Carrasco, David.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="776" ind1="0" ind2="8"><subfield code="i">Print version:</subfield><subfield code="a">Carlsen, Robert S. Carlsen ; with a preface and a new final chapter and with a contribution by Martín Prechtel ; foreword by Davíd Carrasco. War for the heart and soul of a highland Maya town Rev. ed. Austin : University of Texas Press, 2011. 1 online resource (xx, 227 pages) : illustrations, maps text txt rdacontent computer c rdamedia online resource cr rdacarrier data file rda Includes bibliographical references (pages 205-220) and index. pt. 1. Establishing place and imagining community -- pt. 2. History, peripherality, and social pluralism -- pt. 3. Death of community, resurrection of autonomy. This compelling ethnography explores the issue of cultural continuity and change as it has unfolded in the representative Guatemala Mayan town Santiago Atitlán.
