Zusammenfassung: | Focusing on boundaries, appropriations, and resistances involved in Western engagements with South Asian religions, this volume considers both the pre- and postcolonial period in India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh. It pays particular attention to contemporary controversies surrounding the study of South Asian religions, including several scholars' reflections on the contentious reaction to their own work. Other issues explored include British colonial epistemologies, He-gel's study of South Asia, Hindu-Christian interactions in charismatic Catholicism and the canonization of Francis Xavier, feminist interpretations of the mother of the Buddha, and theological controversies among Muslims in Bangladesh and Pakistan. By using the themes of boundaries, appropriations, and resistances, this work offers insight into the dynamics and diversity of Western approaches to South Asian religions and the Indigenous responses to, involvements with, and influences on them. --Book Jacket. |

--Book Jacket.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">South Asia</subfield><subfield code="x">Religion.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Hinduism.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85060932</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Hindouisme.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Asie méridionale</subfield><subfield code="x">Religion.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Hinduism.</subfield><subfield code="2">aat</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">RELIGION</subfield><subfield code="x">History.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">TRAVEL</subfield><subfield code="x">Special Interest</subfield><subfield code="x">Religious.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Hinduism</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Religion</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">South Asia</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="700" ind1="1" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Schmalz, Mathew N.,</subfield><subfield code="d">1964-</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PCjqVYcKc8wR7q8C8HmMJcK</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="700" ind1="1" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Gottschalk, Peter,</subfield><subfield code="d">1963-</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PCjyrh7GQPT3BXY687pR7pP</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n99832859</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="758" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="i">has work:</subfield><subfield code="a">Engaging South Asian religions (Text)</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PCGpfGRjpyJVdffbDMdb36X</subfield><subfield code="4">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/ontology/hasWork</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="776" ind1="0" ind2="8"><subfield code="i">Print version:</subfield><subfield code="t">Engaging South Asian religions.</subfield><subfield code="d">Albany : State University of New York Press, ©2011</subfield><subfield code="z">9781438433233</subfield><subfield code="w">(DLC) 2010005368</subfield><subfield code="w">(OCoLC)522429338</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="830" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">SUNY series in Hindu studies.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n88505841</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="856" ind1="4" ind2="0"><subfield code="l">FWS01</subfield><subfield code="p">ZDB-4-EBA</subfield><subfield code="q">FWS_PDA_EBA</subfield><subfield code="u">https://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site&db=nlebk&AN=367712</subfield><subfield code="3">Volltext</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">EBL - Ebook Library</subfield><subfield code="b">EBLB</subfield><subfield code="n">EBL3407292</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">ebrary</subfield><subfield code="b">EBRY</subfield><subfield code="n">ebr10574154</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">EBSCOhost</subfield><subfield code="b">EBSC</subfield><subfield code="n">367712</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">YBP Library Services</subfield><subfield code="b">YANK</subfield><subfield code="n">6929904</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">YBP Library Services</subfield><subfield code="b">YANK</subfield><subfield code="n">3542552</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="994" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">92</subfield><subfield code="b">GEBAY</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="912" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">ZDB-4-EBA</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="049" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">DE-863</subfield></datafield></record></collection> |

Focusing on boundaries, appropriations, and resistances involved in Western engagements with South Asian religions, this volume considers both the pre- and postcolonial period in India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh.
