Zusammenfassung: | Is disseminating information the main purpose of scholarly scientific literature? Recent work in science studies signals a shift of emphasis from conceptual to material sources, from thinking to doing, and from representing the world to intervening in it. Scientific knowledge production is no longer seen as a process of seeking, collecting, organizing, and processing abstract elements, but instead one of assembling the many different material 'bits and pieces' of scientific culture in order to make things work. In Deflating Information, Bernd Frohmann draws on recent work in the social studies of science, finding the most significant material in the coordination of research work, the stabilization of matters of fact, and the manufacture of objectivity. Arguing for a 'deflationary' account of information, Frohmann challenges the central concept of information studies, thereby laying a foundation for a documentalist approach to emerging issues in the field. |

In Deflating Information, Bernd Frohmann draws on recent work in the social studies of science, finding the most significant material in the coordination of research work, the stabilization of matters of fact, and the manufacture of objectivity. Arguing for a 'deflationary' account of information, Frohmann challenges the central concept of information studies, thereby laying a foundation for a documentalist approach to emerging issues in the field.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Documentation.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85038731</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Information science.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85066150</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Science</subfield><subfield code="x">Social aspects.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="2"><subfield code="a">Documentation</subfield><subfield code="0">https://id.nlm.nih.gov/mesh/D004282</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Documentation.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Sciences de l'information.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Sciences</subfield><subfield code="x">Aspect social.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">documentation (activity)</subfield><subfield code="2">aat</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">information science.</subfield><subfield code="2">aat</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">POLITICAL SCIENCE</subfield><subfield code="x">Public Policy</subfield><subfield code="x">Cultural Policy.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">SOCIAL SCIENCE</subfield><subfield code="x">Anthropology</subfield><subfield code="x">Cultural.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">SOCIAL SCIENCE</subfield><subfield code="x">Popular Culture.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">SCIENCE</subfield><subfield code="x">Philosophy & Social Aspects.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Documentation</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Information science</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Science</subfield><subfield code="x">Social aspects</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1="1" ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Informatiewetenschap.</subfield><subfield code="2">gtt</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1="1" ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Communicatiewetenschap.</subfield><subfield code="2">gtt</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1="1" ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Documentaire informatie.</subfield><subfield code="2">gtt</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Ciência da informação.</subfield><subfield code="2">larpcal</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Documentação.</subfield><subfield code="2">larpcal</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="758" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="i">has work:</subfield><subfield code="a">Deflating information (Text)</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PCFWmWkmk9q4d4Dh67TrhxP</subfield><subfield code="4">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/ontology/hasWork</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="776" ind1="0" ind2="8"><subfield code="i">Print version:</subfield><subfield code="a">Frohmann, Bernd.</subfield><subfield code="t">Deflating information.</subfield><subfield code="d">Toronto ; Toronto ; Buffalo : University of Toronto Press, 2004. 1 online resource (x, 311 pages) text txt rdacontent computer c rdamedia online resource cr rdacarrier Includes bibliographical references (pages 287-301) and index. Introduction: From information to documentation -- Epistemic narratives of the social life of science -- Scientists and other information users -- Epistemology versus practice -- Studies of scientific practices -- Literary technologies of science -- Documenting universality -- Documenting stability. Is disseminating information the main purpose of scholarly scientific literature?
