Zusammenfassung: | Foreign aid is now a $100bn business and is expanding more rapidly today than it has for a generation. But does it work? Indeed, is it needed at all? Other attempts to answer this important question have been dominated by a focus on the impact of official aid provided by governments. But today possibly as much as 30 percent of aid is provided by non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and over 10 percent is provided as emergency assistance. In this first-ever attempt to provide an overall assessment of aid, Riddell presents a rigorous but highly readable account of aid, warts and all. This book sets out the evidence and exposes the instances where aid has failed and explains why. It also examines the way that short-term political interests distort aid, and disentangles the moral and ethical assumptions that lie behind the belief that aid does good. The book concludes by detailing the practical ways that aid needs to change if it is to be the effective force for good that its providers claim it is.--Book jacket. |

The book concludes by detailing the practical ways that aid needs to change if it is to be the effective force for good that its providers claim it is.--Book jacket.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="588" ind1="0" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Print version record.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="546" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">English.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Economic assistance.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85040767</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Economic assistance</subfield><subfield code="x">Evaluation.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Doping in sports.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85039081</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1="1" ind2="2"><subfield code="a">Doping in Sports</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Aide économique.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Aide économique</subfield><subfield code="x">Évaluation.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Dopage dans les sports.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">assistance.</subfield><subfield code="2">aat</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">POLITICAL SCIENCE</subfield><subfield code="x">Public Policy</subfield><subfield code="x">Economic Policy.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">BUSINESS & ECONOMICS</subfield><subfield code="x">Government & Business.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">BUSINESS & ECONOMICS</subfield><subfield code="x">Development</subfield><subfield code="x">Economic Development.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">BUSINESS & ECONOMICS</subfield><subfield code="x">Development</subfield><subfield code="x">Business Development.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">BUSINESS & ECONOMICS</subfield><subfield code="x">Structural Adjustment.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">BUSINESS & ECONOMICS</subfield><subfield code="x">Development</subfield><subfield code="x">General.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Aide au développement.</subfield><subfield code="2">eclas</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Evaluation de l'aide.</subfield><subfield code="2">eclas</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Pays développés.</subfield><subfield code="2">eclas</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Aide bilatérale.</subfield><subfield code="2">eclas</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Aide multilatérale.</subfield><subfield code="2">eclas</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Organisations non gouvernementales.</subfield><subfield code="2">eclas</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Doping in sports</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Economic assistance</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Economic assistance</subfield><subfield code="x">Evaluation</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1="1" ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Ontwikkelingssamenwerking.</subfield><subfield code="2">gtt</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1="1" ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Effectiviteit.</subfield><subfield code="2">gtt</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Entwicklungshilfe</subfield><subfield code="x">Evaluation.</subfield><subfield code="2">idsbb</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Finanzielle Entwicklungshilfe.</subfield><subfield code="2">idsbb</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="758" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="i">has work:</subfield><subfield code="a">Does foreign aid really work? Foreign aid is now a $100bn business and is expanding more rapidly today than it has for a generation. Print version record. English.
