Zusammenfassung: | Collectively, mankind has never had it so good despite periodic economic crises of which the current sub-prime crisis is merely the latest example. Much of this success is attributable to the increasing efficiency of the world's financial institutions as finance has proved to be one of the most important causal factors in economic performance. In a series of insightful essays, financial and economic historians examine how financial innovations from the seventeenth century to the present have continually challenged established institutional arrangements, forcing change and adaptation by governments, financial intermediaries, and financial markets. Where these have been successful, wealth creation and growth have followed. When they failed, growth slowed and sometimes economic decline has followed. These essays illustrate the difficulties of co-ordinating financial innovations in order to sustain their benefits for the wider economy, a theme that will be of interest to policy makers as well as economic historians. |

These essays illustrate the difficulties of co-ordinating financial innovations in order to sustain their benefits for the wider economy, a theme that will be of interest to policy makers as well as economic historians.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Financial institutions</subfield><subfield code="v">Congresses.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Capital market</subfield><subfield code="v">Congresses.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Banks and banking</subfield><subfield code="v">Congresses.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Institutions financières</subfield><subfield code="v">Congrès.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Marché financier</subfield><subfield code="v">Congrès.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">financial institutions (institutions)</subfield><subfield code="2">aat</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">BUSINESS & ECONOMICS</subfield><subfield code="x">Banks & Banking.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Banks and banking</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Capital market</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Financial institutions</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1="1" ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Financiële instellingen.</subfield><subfield code="2">gtt</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1="1" ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Financiële crises.</subfield><subfield code="2">gtt</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1="1" ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Financiële structuur.</subfield><subfield code="2">gtt</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Finanzmarkt.</subfield><subfield code="2">stw</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Finanzsektor.</subfield><subfield code="2">stw</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Institutionelle Infrastruktur.</subfield><subfield code="2">stw</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Zentralbank.</subfield><subfield code="2">stw</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Finanzreform.</subfield><subfield code="2">stw</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Bank.</subfield><subfield code="2">stw</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Finanzmarktkrise.</subfield><subfield code="2">stw</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Bankgeschichte.</subfield><subfield code="2">stw</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Industriestaaten.</subfield><subfield code="2">stw</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="655" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Electronic books.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="655" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Conference papers and proceedings</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="700" ind1="1" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Neal, Larry,</subfield><subfield code="d">1941-</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PBJvd4dG9gXtjrCfx6hwwG3</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n89117531</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="758" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="i">has work:</subfield><subfield code="a">The origins and development of financial markets and institutions (Text)</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PCFt9thwMwg7GgXkKpkJT6q</subfield><subfield code="4">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/ontology/hasWork</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="776" ind1="0" ind2="8"><subfield code="i">Print version:</subfield><subfield code="a">Atack, Jeremy.</subfield><subfield code="t">Origins and development of financial markets and institutions.</subfield><subfield code="d">Cambridge, UK ; Includes bibliographical references and index. Print version record. Collectively, mankind has never had it so good despite periodic economic crises of which the current sub-prime crisis is merely the latest example.
