Zusammenfassung: | In 1861 Paul Broca discovered that, in most individuals, the left hemisphere of the brain is dominant for language. Taking language as an example, the first part of this book explains the normal development of bodily asymmetry and lateralization, its association with hand preference, genetic aspects, geographical differences and the influence of gender. The coverage then moves on to review the association between language lateralization and psychosis, describing findings in patients with schizophrenia to suggest the dominant hemisphere may fail to completely inhibit the language areas in the non-dominant half. The language allowed to 'release' from the right hemisphere can lead to psychotic symptoms including auditory verbal hallucinations and formal thought disorder. This book should be read by psychiatrists, neurologists and neuroscientists working in the field of psychosis and other brain scientists interested in laterality. |

This book should be read by psychiatrists, neurologists and neuroscientists working in the field of psychosis and other brain scientists interested in laterality.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="505" ind1="0" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Cover; Half-title; Title; Copyright; Contents; Contributors; Preface; Section 1 Asymmetry, handedness and language lateralization; Section 2 Language lateralization and psychosis; Index</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="546" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">English.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Laterality.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85074846</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Cerebral dominance</subfield><subfield code="x">Psychological aspects.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Neurolinguistics.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85091130</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Schizophrenia</subfield><subfield code="x">Physiological aspects.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85118168</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Auditory hallucinations.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh99011146</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Schizophrenics</subfield><subfield code="x">Language.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85118172</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Verbal behavior.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85142797</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1="2" ind2="2"><subfield code="a">Functional Laterality</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1="2" ind2="2"><subfield code="a">Schizophrenic Language</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1="2" ind2="2"><subfield code="a">Verbal Behavior</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Latéralité.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Dominance cérébrale</subfield><subfield code="x">Aspect psychologique.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Neurolinguistique.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Hallucinations auditives.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Schizophrènes</subfield><subfield code="x">Langage.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Comportement verbal.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">MEDICAL</subfield><subfield code="x">Neuroscience.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">PSYCHOLOGY</subfield><subfield code="x">Neuropsychology.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Verbal behavior</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Schizophrenics</subfield><subfield code="x">Language</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Auditory hallucinations</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Laterality</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Neurolinguistics</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Schizophrenia</subfield><subfield code="x">Physiological aspects</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">langage</subfield><subfield code="x">latéralité</subfield><subfield code="x">psychose.</subfield><subfield code="2">rero</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="655" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Electronic books.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="655" ind1=" " ind2="4"><subfield code="a">Electronic books.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="700" ind1="1" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Sommer, Iris E. spelling | Language lateralization and psychosis / edited by Iris E.C. Sommer, René S. Kahn. Cambridge, UK ; New York : Cambridge University Press, 2009. 1 online resource (ix, 204 pages, 4 unnumbered pages of plates) : illustrations (some color) text txt rdacontent computer c rdamedia online resource cr rdacarrier Cambridge medicine Includes bibliographical references (pages 194-196) and index. Print version record. In 1861 Paul Broca discovered that, in most individuals, the left hemisphere of the brain is dominant for language.
