Zusammenfassung: | Can animals be taught a human language and use it to communicate? Or is human language unique to human beings, just as many complex behaviours of other species are uniquely theirs? This engrossing book explores communication and cognition in animals and humans from a linguistic point of view and asserts that animals are not capable of acquiring or using human language. Stephen Anderson explains what is meant by communication, the difference between communication and language, and the essential characteristics of language. Next he examines a variety of animal communication systems, including bee dances, frog vocalizations, bird songs, and alarm calls and other vocal, gestural, and olfactory communication among primates. Anderson then compares these to human language, including signed languages used by the deaf. Arguing that attempts to teach human languages or their equivalents to the great apes have not succeeded in demonstrating linguistic abilities in nonhuman species, he concludes that animal communication systems, intriguing and varied though they may be, do not include all the essential properties of human language. Animals can communicate, but they can't talk. |

Animals can communicate, but they can't talk.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="546" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">English.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Animal communication.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85005167</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Language and languages.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85074518</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="2"><subfield code="a">Animal Communication</subfield><subfield code="0">https://id.nlm.nih.gov/mesh/D000819</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="2"><subfield code="a">Language</subfield><subfield code="0">https://id.nlm.nih.gov/mesh/D007802</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Communication animale.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Langage et langues.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">SCIENCE</subfield><subfield code="x">Life Sciences</subfield><subfield code="x">Zoology</subfield><subfield code="x">General.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Animal communication</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Language and languages</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1="1" ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Dieren.</subfield><subfield code="2">gtt</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1="1" ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Communicatie.</subfield><subfield code="2">gtt</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="655" ind1=" " ind2="4"><subfield code="a">Electronic book.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="758" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="i">has work:</subfield><subfield code="a">Doctor Dolittle's delusion (Text)</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PCFwyFXBBxw4mYrTk7QcWym</subfield><subfield code="4">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/ontology/hasWork</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="776" ind1="0" ind2="8"><subfield code="i">Print version:</subfield><subfield code="a">Anderson, Stephen R.</subfield><subfield code="t">Doctor Dolittle's delusion.</subfield><subfield code="d">New Haven : Yale University Press, ©2004</subfield><subfield code="z">0300103395</subfield><subfield code="z">9780300103397</subfield><subfield code="w">(DLC) 2004044309</subfield><subfield code="w">(OCoLC)54365138</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="856" ind1="4" ind2="0"><subfield code="l">FWS01</subfield><subfield code="p">ZDB-4-EBA</subfield><subfield code="q">FWS_PDA_EBA</subfield><subfield code="u">https://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site&db=nlebk&AN=187718</subfield><subfield code="3">Volltext</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">EBL - Ebook Library</subfield><subfield code="b">EBLB</subfield><subfield code="n">EBL3420057</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">ebrary</subfield><subfield code="b">EBRY</subfield><subfield code="n">ebr10170083</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">EBSCOhost</subfield><subfield code="b">EBSC</subfield><subfield code="n">187718</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">ProQuest MyiLibrary Digital eBook Collection</subfield><subfield code="b">IDEB</subfield><subfield code="n">174068</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">YBP Library Services</subfield><subfield code="b">YANK</subfield><subfield code="n">2548092</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="994" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">92</subfield><subfield code="b">GEBAY</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="912" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">ZDB-4-EBA</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="049" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">DE-863</subfield></datafield></record></collection> |

Or is human language unique to human beings, just as many complex behaviours of other species are uniquely theirs? This engrossing book explores communication and cognition in animals and humans from a linguistic point of view and asserts that animals are not capable of acquiring or using human language.
