Zusammenfassung: | This is a fully annotated edition of selected letters by (and in some cases to) Sir J.G. Frazer (1854-1941), the eminent anthropologist, classicist, and historian of religion. "Frazer" was read by virtually everyone working in those fields in the first third of the twentieth century. His great work, "The Golden Bough", offered a grand vision of humanity's mental and spiritual evolution - from vain attempts to compel the gods to do our bidding (which Frazer called magic) through equally vain attempts to propitiate the gods through prayer and sacrifice (his characterization of religion) to rationality and science. His richly varied correspondence with prominent figures such as Edmund Gosse, A.E. Housman, and Bronislaw Malinowski, among others, offers an unparalleled insight into British intellectual life of the time, and also throws light upon the composition of "The Golden Bough" itself. |

Housman, and Bronislaw Malinowski, among others, offers an unparalleled insight into British intellectual life of the time, and also throws light upon the composition of "The Golden Bough" itself.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="546" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">English.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="600" ind1="1" ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Frazer, James George,</subfield><subfield code="d">1854-1941</subfield><subfield code="v">Correspondence.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="600" ind1="1" ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Frazer, James George,</subfield><subfield code="d">1854-1941</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PBJwHcv88tKQrQxBqGkVgrq</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Mythologists</subfield><subfield code="v">Correspondence.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Mythologists</subfield><subfield code="v">Biography.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Mythologues</subfield><subfield code="v">Correspondance.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Mythologues</subfield><subfield code="v">Biographies.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">BIOGRAPHY & AUTOBIOGRAPHY</subfield><subfield code="x">Social Scientists & Psychologists.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">SOCIAL SCIENCE</subfield><subfield code="x">Regional Studies.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">SOCIAL SCIENCE</subfield><subfield code="x">Anthropology</subfield><subfield code="x">General.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Mythologists</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Religion.</subfield><subfield code="2">hilcc</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Philosophy & Religion.</subfield><subfield code="2">hilcc</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Mythology, Comparative.</subfield><subfield code="2">hilcc</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="655" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Biographies</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="655" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Personal correspondence</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="700" ind1="1" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Ackerman, Robert,</subfield><subfield code="d">1935-</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PCjtBBhbMFc77G6W8CKHGMd</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n86052603</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="758" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="i">has work:</subfield><subfield code="a">Selections Correspondence (Text)</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PCGmcfKJyjbwMh44Wqgt8BX</subfield><subfield code="4">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/ontology/hasWork</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="776" ind1="0" ind2="8"><subfield code="i">Print version:</subfield><subfield code="a">Frazer, James George, Sir, 1854-1941.</subfield><subfield code="s">Correspondence. General introduction -- Before The golden bough, 1875-90 -- Anthropology and the classics, 1890-1900 -- The third edition, 1901-15 -- After The golden bough, 1916-31. Print version record. This is a fully annotated edition of selected letters by (and in some cases to) Sir J.G.
