Zusammenfassung: | This volume provides a complete description of ASL variation. People from varying regions and backgrounds have different ways of saying the same thing. For example, in English some people say "test," while others say "tes'," dropping the final "t." Noted scholars Ceil Lucas, Robert Bayley, and Clayton Valli led a team of exceptional researchers in applying techniques for analyzing spoken language variation to ASL. Their observations at the phonological, lexical, morphological, and syntactic levels demonstrate that ASL variation correlates with many of the same driving social factors of spoken languages, including age, socioeconomic class, gender, ethnic background, region, and sexual orientation. Internal constraints that mandate variant choices for spoken languages have been compared to ASL as well, with intriguing results. |

Internal constraints that mandate variant choices for spoken languages have been compared to ASL as well, with intriguing results.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">American Sign Language</subfield><subfield code="x">Social aspects.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">American Sign Language</subfield><subfield code="x">Aspect social.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">LANGUAGE ARTS & DISCIPLINES</subfield><subfield code="x">Sign Language.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">LANGUAGE ARTS & DISCIPLINES / General</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Sociolinguistics</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="655" ind1=" " ind2="4"><subfield code="a">Electronic book.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="700" ind1="1" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Bayley, Robert,</subfield><subfield code="d">1943-</subfield><subfield code="e">author.</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PBJw4HjrQWVR9W877jPMtrq</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n2001025332</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="700" ind1="1" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Valli, Clayton,</subfield><subfield code="e">author.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n92009113</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="700" ind1="1" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Rose, Mary</subfield><subfield code="q">(Mary Aleene)</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PCjGTj8w7bkQVkrRJy9CKHP</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/no2014148178</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="776" ind1="0" ind2="8"><subfield code="i">Print version:</subfield><subfield code="a">Lucas, Ceil.</subfield><subfield code="t">Sociolinguistic variation in American sign language.</subfield><subfield code="d">Washington, D.C. : Gallaudet University Press, ©2001</subfield><subfield code="z">1563681137</subfield><subfield code="w">(OCoLC)48042918</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="830" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Sociolinguistics in deaf communities series ;</subfield><subfield code="v">v. 7.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/no96048964</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="856" ind1="4" ind2="0"><subfield code="l">FWS01</subfield><subfield code="p">ZDB-4-EBA</subfield><subfield code="q">FWS_PDA_EBA</subfield><subfield code="u">https://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site&db=nlebk&AN=124737</subfield><subfield code="3">Volltext</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">ACLS Humanities Ebook Collection</subfield><subfield code="b">ACLS</subfield><subfield code="n">heb40114</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">ACLS Humanities E-Book</subfield><subfield code="b">ACLS</subfield><subfield code="n">MIU401140001001</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">ProQuest Ebook Central</subfield><subfield code="b">EBLB</subfield><subfield code="n">EBL3010921</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">ebrary</subfield><subfield code="b">EBRY</subfield><subfield code="n">ebr10078149</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">EBSCOhost</subfield><subfield code="b">EBSC</subfield><subfield code="n">124737</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Project MUSE</subfield><subfield code="b">MUSE</subfield><subfield code="n">muse5563</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">YBP Library Services</subfield><subfield code="b">YANK</subfield><subfield code="n">2357866</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="994" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">92</subfield><subfield code="b">GEBAY</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="912" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">ZDB-4-EBA</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="049" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">DE-863</subfield></datafield></record></collection> |

This volume provides a complete description of ASL variation.
