As we outlined in the first chapter, family structure remains a key component of both economic inequality and popular narratives about inequality. We believe that any examination of inequality must account for family structure. Our reasoning is simple: wages are earned by individuals, but they're converted into living standards that affect all family members. For most families, individual adults' participation in the labor market is the primary source of income. Like previous researchers, we've documented decades of low incomes for single-mother families. Fundamentally this isn't surprising, given their reliance on a single wage earner. Transfers from non-resident parents and the state are directly related to family structure, but this income rarely makes up for the absence of two potential wage-earners"--
