Summary:In order to qualify the relationship between the Kunsthandlung Julius Böhler and the Hamburger Kunsthalle, this contribution provides a succinct synopsis of the two major archival sources in Munich and Hamburg. Interestingly, the analysis shows that fewer objects were traded than expected. However, the combination reveals essential – and previously unknown – information regarding the objects preserved in the Hamburger Kunsthalle. For instance, the documents enhance the provenance, inform about the contemporary condition of the artworks, the various titles and the different attributions over time. Based on these findings, new approaches for provenance research can be developed
