Mid-decade was the Nervous Nineties, demonstrated by many events including HIV AIDS pandemic, Japanese economic competition, Ruby Ridge, Waco siege, and Oklahoma City bombing. Technological advances included the Hubble Space Telescope, Mapping the human genome, laptops, the dot.com revolution and smart cellphones. Culturally, many themes accelerated contributing to Anything Goes America. Obscenity, four letter words, pornography, moved into mainstream, continually broadcast over the internet. Hip-hop became the most popular music genre, and reality tv shows proliferated. The end of the century witnessed the Anything Goes President immersed in a year-long scandal with Monica Lewinsky, and his impeachment.
