It grew out of a conference, 'Changes in the Chinese Party-State in the Xi Jinping Era', held at the IIR on 24-25 October 2019. The editors are grateful for financial endorsement during the conference and the editorial process of the book from the Foundation on Asia-Pacific Peace Studies, the Institute of Political Science at Academia Sinica, Mainland Affairs Council, Taipei City Government, Taiwan Foundation for Democracy, the IIR at National Chengchi University, and the Australian Centre on China in the World at the Australian National University. Six chapters of this edited volume, which have since been revised and updated, first appeared in Issues and Studies, an English-language academic journal run by the IIR and published by World Scientific. The journal's reprint permission has been indispensable to this edited volume."
