Summary:The visual worlds of dwelling that constantly confront us in magazines and journals, in popular everyday media, and especially on digital plat- forms such as Instagram and Airbnb have become familiar aspects of everyday life. On our smartphones we now carry with us digital images of dwelling that can be called up at any time. Through their permanent reproduction on different platforms, visual hegemonies of dwelling in- scribe themselves into our concepts of dwelling as ideals to be achieved. But how is dwelling represented and exhibited on platforms, and how does this representation alter our understanding of dwelling and the built environment? Can platforms also provide a (digital) space of possibilities for counter-hegemonic imageries of dwelling? This paper uses selected home and interior accounts from the photo-sharing platform Instagram to explore these and other questions.
