Zusammenfassung: | At the end of the Middle Ages in Europe, a new type of maps developed, that described local spaces or places, including cities, villages, rural areas, parishes, jurisdictional territories, counties or small regions, and river courses, etc. They were commissioned by various patrons and served many different purposes, including the administration of justice and of territory, construction and repair, commemoration of historical events and celebration of cities. Because of their functional character, they can be categorized as "pragmatic mapping" (referring to pragmatic literacy). These maps were generally produced by a painter, mostly on parchment, and were finely drawn and painted with beautiful colours. Investigating the use of colours in this corpus, this paper shows that colours were generally used referring to the real landscape, but also to pictorial traditions, and sometimes to a specific colour code. They were also determined by the expectations of their patrons and audiences, and by the skills of the painters/mapmakers. Eventually, the use of colours in these maps reveal a robust link between art and cartography. |
