Summary:The subgenre of the nocturnal landscape, which was strongly shaped by the artist Aert van der Neer (1603/4-1677), is apparently driven by an interest in the challenge of painting the near absence of light and thus by the negotiation of the medium with its framework conditions. Therefore, the function of paint in these nightscapes is not being exhausted in its colourant mimetic agenda. Rather, in its application, a strong inherent value comes to light. Thus, in the reduction to a monochromaticity rarely seen in painting the tangible textures of the paint application obtain a generative momentum.
