SUMMARY This book publishes primary ethnographic and folklore sources preserved in the archives of the Institute of Romanian Philology ‘Bogdan Petriceicu-Hasdeu’ and the Institute of Cul tural Heritage from Chișinău. The manuscripts and tapes have recently been digitised in the context of the project “Saving the Folkloric Archival Material Preserved in Chișinău, Republic of Moldova (ЕАР1045)” within the Endangered Archives Pro grammes, offered by the British Library. The ethnological and folkloric documents offer a retrospective look at the customs and folklore of the holidays specific to spring, summer and autumn, recorded during the field research campaigns carried out be tween 1956 and 1992. The book continues and complements the publications elaborated within the series The Folklore Treasury of the Romanians from the Republic of Moldova, Ukraine and the Russian Federation. The archive documents talk about the folklore and customs associated with the calendar holidays in the rural area of Bessara bia (within the Kingdom of Romania, 1918-1940,1941-1944), the Moldavian Soviet Socialist Republic (part of the Soviet Union, 1940-1941,1944-1991), and respectively the Republic of Moldova (after 1991-present). Researchers have the oportunity to follow through the nar ratives and testimonies of the informants how the ethnographic, folkloric, and religious manifestations of the feasts celebrated in the warm time of the year, still active in the first half of the 20th century, were subjected to a process of dilution, ‘ideological cen sorship’ by communism, in the second half
of the same century. To these, the change of liturgical time, the introduction of sur rogate holidays, the support of the optics of the social philoso- 242
phy of communism, alphabetization policy, rural-urban migra tion, industrialization and the transition to state ownership, etc. came to the junction. The usefulness of a continuous trajectory of documenting led me to supplement the respective data with in formation from my personal archive, obtained during the ethno graphic field researches carried out between 2010 and 2023. Con sequently, the answers of the informants, as well as the reality of the site after the collapse of the Soviet Union, draw attention for noticing some congruent processes, of expressing nostalgia for tradition, a revival of the religious habits parallelly with the dis play of divergent praxes, which fluctuate according to age groups, social and living environments, level of education, etc. The texts presented in the book record the collective de clarative memory and experience, specific and emergent to the changes of the 20th century and the repositioning of the social and cultural patterns distinct to the beginning of the 21st cen tury. Therefore, the publication of this corpus of documents in Romanian, especially the regional variety spoken in north eastern Romania, the Republic of Moldova and small areas of Ukraine (Chernivtsi and Odessa Oblast), offers primary sources of ethnography and folklore to the young researchers and foreign scholars. They have been transliterated from the Cyrillic script, adding the suitable explanations and notes, in the direction of providing them in appropriate comprehensive frameworks. The book keeps the classic format of such corpora in academ ic literature,
outlining the facts, phenomena, and local ethnofolkloric expressions. On the same methodological template, I propose a critical apparatus consisting of a thematic index. It is established on concepts and notions related to the subject, as well as used in cultural and social anthropology, the anthropology of religion. It aims at suggesting and indicating the approaches to the specialists in investigating the customs and folklore of the spring, summer and autumn cycle holidays placed in contexts of social and economic history, fluctuating cultural behaviours. To be, as well, drawing on epistemological models and current theo- 243
retical trends, which involve comparative and critical analyses, re-examination and to answer in what extent they can be referred to the reality in the Republic of Moldova. The field notes, graphic sketches, ethno-folkloric narratives, answers to ethnographic questionnaires, folklore texts, sequenc es from interviews, and photographic materials provide ample information through which to see in the customs and lore of calendar holidays expressions of understanding the spiritual di mensions and the communal and economic life of individuals. In the same context, I add the affective and psychological shifts and changes caused by political ideologies and crises, to which a society is subjected during a certain time. Also, the frequency of enacting ritual, ceremonial, folkloric, and social scenarios, and the attitude of individuals towards the repertoire of celebrations during the year, communicate relevant images of religious be haviours and cultural and collective identity, as well as the effects of their eradication, vanishing, or adaptation in various factors and conditions. The co-presence of objectivity and subjectivity in the texts give the opportunity for specialists to identify evidence and ar guments about how customs have entered the sphere of collec tive memory. Referring to those still active, how they have been largely erased by mytho-folkloric beliefs, representations, and interpretations, going on functional under the social, econom ic-occupational profiles, leisure and identity revival, which they kept or were attributed to them relatively recently. That is
why such a corpus of documents becomes even more necessary, as it brings into the view of research, to the attention and curiosity of people, an ethnographic and folklore reality, some would say close to loss. Others would also argue that this is a reality mir roring individuals, community and their experiences in recent technological progress, mobility and rising living standards, the cultural nostalgia of Generation X and the cross-border cultural preferences of Generations Y and Z, as well as the challenges that Generation Alpha will bring them. To all this, experimenting and 244
usefulness of the local culture resources against the background of sustainability and climate change, choosing of particular life styles and diets, resistance and confrontations to pandemic haz ards and economic uncertainties, as well as cultural exchanges, mutations and adjustments in situations of conflicts and forced coexistence should be considered. Reflecting on these realities, with the aim of changing of the problems and the analytical perspectives in ethnological and folklore research in the Republic of Moldova, it is fitting to suggest some examples of perspectives under which this cycle of holidays and its varied phenomena can be investigated and rewritten. The inquiries need to be directed towards the reinterpretation of the notions of “tradition”, “folk memory”, and “cultural experience” on the trajectory of the crises and transitions processes, as well as globalization, digitalization, integration and migration, secu larization, discourses of cultural policies, patrimonialization, and eventization, inclusion and collective consumption, etc. In the same line of ideas, studies aimed at analysing what functions fulfil customs and folklore in the conditions of cross-border mo bility - between memory and nostalgia - respectively in Diaspora and temporary communities, etc., would be novel. The corpus of texts creates a folkloric diachronic view on the celebrations in the rural environment of the current Republic of Moldova, ex RSSM, and the Province of Bessarabia. The book mirrors as well as the ethnography of the local orthodoxy. This leads us to look
comparatively and reflexively at the past and the present of the community, to understand attitudes, to explain behaviours, and to contest ideas in social, political, economic, ideological, and cultural frameworks that are always in changing and alternating. 245 |
