Zusammenfassung:	The essay aims to reread the history of the first decades of the Order of Friars minor considering the key concept of ‘multitudes’. Francis’ entire biographical trajectory was characterized by a response to the mandate to evangelize. Evangelical poverty and preaching represented two characteristic aspects of his activities, as documented in hagiographic sources from the 13th century. In imitation of their Order’s founder, the friars who followed him also sought to meet the requirements of the evangelical man-date. In the decades following the saint’s death, however, the manner and purpose of missionary actionchanged. Considering the relationship between these communities of friars and the various multitudes with whom they came into contact thus involves investigating the process of institutionalising Francis’s charis-matic experience from another perspective. Il saggio punta a una rilettura della storia dei primi decenni dell’Ordine dei Frati minori, considerando il concetto-chiave delle ‘moltitudini’. La risposta al mandato evangelico ha caratterizzato l’intera esperienza biografica di Francesco. La povertà evangelica e la predicazione rappresentarono due tratti caratteristici della sua azione, come documentano le fonti agiografiche del secolo XIII. A imitazione del fondatore, anche i frati che lo seguirono cercarono di corrispondere al mandato evangelico. Tuttavia, il modo e lo scopo dell’azione missionaria nei decenni successivi alla morte del santo mutarono. Considerare, quindi, il rapporto tra le comunità di frati e le diverse moltitudini con cui venivano in contatto significa indagare da un’altra prospettiva il problema del processo di istituzionalizzazione dell’esperienza carismatica di Francesco.
