Zusammenfassung: | "Developed in conjunction with an exhibition of work by Jim Denomie (1955-2022) organized by the Minneapolis Institute of Art, this vibrant and thoughtful catalogue is the first in-depth look at the influential Ojibwe artist's oeuvre. A member of the Lac Courte Oreilles Band of the Anishinaabe, Denomie did not begin painting in earnest until he was in his thirties, when he became a pivotal figure in both local and national art circles. Known for his troubadour-like approach to art, Denomie was a prolific painter, often working on several pieces at once. In 1995, he received a BFA in art and a BA in American Indian studies from the University of Minnesota. The Lyrical Artwork of Jim Denomie draws primarily from the last fifteen years of the artist's career, with works that incorporate traditional Anishinaabe motifs, his lived experiences, and his take on American pop culture and history. His large-scale paintings in particular include pointed references to historical and contemporary issues and injustices. Along with the emotional weight of his keen social criticism, Denomie's works also offer dark humor, satire, surrealism, and visual exuberance"-- An interview entitled "Q&A with Jim Denomie: transcript from an interview by the Muskegon Museum of Art" was conducted in conjunction with "Jim Denomie, Challenging the Narrative", an exhibition of recent work by the artist on display at the Muskegon Museum of Art, December 10, 2020-March 14, 2021. Important to the artist that his voice be included, this interview is one of the last recorded interviews before his passing in March 2022 |
