Summary:Scheduled for the reopening of the Ipiranga Museum in 2022, the exhibition Uma História do Brasil shows the true "theater of memory" created by Afonso Taunay on the occasion of the Museum's centenary celebrations, in 1922. The exhibition is curated by Paulo César Garcez Marins , co-curated by Michelli Scapol Monteiro and Thais Chang Waldman, and with research and curatorial assistance from Eduardo Polidori Villanova de Oliveira, and the articles in this book present different aspects of its conception. Already in its title, it starts from the understanding that this is just one of the possible versions to narrate the history of Brazil, and that it is currently widely questioned. Turning the version created by Taunay into an exhibition also implies taking it as a document of the past in which it was conceived and realized. According to the curator, the history that the paintings and sculptures show is maintained not as an exact vision of the Brazilian past, but as a version of that past accepted and sponsored by São Paulo's government elites.
