Zusammenfassung: | This book "interrogates - and challenges - the proposition that most universities are charities as a matter of law, and explores the consequences of charitable status for those that are : both in terms of the way universities operate and in terms of their relations with the State. It demonstrates that charity law has a valuable contribution to make to current debates around education and research strategies, executive remuneration, and governance. It also investigates to what extent universities can be said to manifest the critical quality of independence from government, which charity law both demands and upholds. The author includes an examination of the recent transactions which saw the formerly charitable College of Law and Regent's University 'converted' to for-profit status. This book reveals how the University-Charity can be expected to behave differently, and to be treated differently, from other universities in the sector" -- Back cover |
