Summary In this book we have dealt with the intersection of the biographies of leading noblemen and the subject of selected literary monuments throughout the reign of the last Přemyslids, i.e. at the end of the 13th century. We relied on contemporary documents, chronicles, artefacts of material culture and literature. We focused on two members of leading aristocratic families that appear in the texts as commissioners of literary texts, i.e. Boresch (III) of Riesenburg and Raymund of Lichtenburg. We made an attempt to clarify the contemporary context and focused on the question of what forms of courtly representation can be observed in these members of the upper nobility. We have described aspects of courtly representation in various forms (heraldry, numismatics, mansions, monasteries and, last but not least, literary texts). We were particularly interested in how the above-defined elements contributed towards the establishment of the so-called collective identity. Literature, as a form of courtly representation, played an absolutely pivotal role in the Middle Ages. For this reason, we have tried to reflect upon the question of the circumstances under which literary works were created, in our case two texts: Alexander or Alexander-Anhang (Appendix) by Ulrich of Etzenbach and Tristan by Henry of Freiberg, and also on the question to what extent the life stories of these extremely interesting noblemen could have influenced the ambition to influence the form of a literary work. It is apparent to us that a certain amount of speculation is unavoidable in this question. We
have also attempted to critically revise the dating of those texts in the light of recent findings. Although the fates of Boresch and Raymund were quite different, one common denominator could be found. Their relationship, or rather the relationship of the representatives of their family to the monarch, was rather complicated. This partially accounts for the fact that the fate of Boresch and his family is full of twists and turns and unfavourable circumstances. Both Boresch and Raymund belonged to roughly the same generation of the emerging upper nobility yet their lives were diametrically opposed. While Raymund firmly established himself in the environment of the monarch s court and became a holder of important offices, Boresch (III) never got to the monarch s proximity. Boresch was apparently still haunted by the treason committed against Přemysl II by his eponymous grandfather at the end of his reign. He was subsequently condemned for this. Boresch (HI) thus had to concentrate more on the rehabilitation of his family honour and estates. 161
Therefore, it seems to us that the main idea of the so-called Appendix to Alexander, which is completely outside the previous literary tradition, could reflect a kind of wishful thinking, a kind of manual for the functioning of the relationship between the monarch and the higher nobility, which is based on diplomatic negotiations and eliminates the role of power and violence. It is possible that such a perspective reflected an effort to rehabilitate a family whose loyalty to the monarch was questionable and whose reputation was unflattering at the time. In the case of Raymund, we are unable to support the main ideological shift from tradition, or the utter condemnation of the love between Tristan and Isolde and the call for an inclination towards non-secular love, with biographical data. It is not clear whether this is an intervention of the patron in the form of the work or an arbitrary interpretive shift by Henry or not. We do not know whether the motives were personal, or whether the author was responding to a contemporary trend, as mentioned above. The final section was devoted to the Sternbergs and their family legend, which (in a significantly altered form) has survived to the present day. Using the 13th century Hungarian charters as an example, we have shown that the stories that were told in a courtly setting did not only take the form of sophisticated literary works. At the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries, chivalry was still firmly linked to the warrior ethos and, therefore, stories of heroic deeds, both ones own and those of one s ancestors, formed an
important element of personal and familial presentation. Although the heroic ancestor of the Sternbergs, who saved the whole of Christian Europe from the pagan yoke in the vicinity of Olomouc, appears in written form for the first time only after the mid-14th century, it is evident that it has deeper roots. Thus, at the court of Wenceslas II, in addition to the recitation of Tristan, there were tales of the brave deeds of the ancestors of noble courtiers, among which the Sternberg one probably stood out the most. It is part of the work of historians and historians of literature alike to seek the limits of human knowledge. In our research we have come across questions that have no clear answer. Nevertheless, we hope that the book you hold in your hands will be appreciated both the professionals and the general public. 162

Summary In this book we have dealt with the intersection of the biographies of leading noblemen and the subject of selected literary monuments throughout the reign of the last Přemyslids, i.e. at the end of the 13th century. We relied on contemporary documents, chronicles, artefacts of material culture and literature. We focused on two members of leading aristocratic families that appear in the texts as commissioners of literary texts, i.e. Boresch (III) of Riesenburg and Raymund of Lichtenburg. We made an attempt to clarify the contemporary context and focused on the question of what forms of courtly representation can be observed in these members of the upper nobility. We have described aspects of courtly representation in various forms (heraldry, numismatics, mansions, monasteries and, last but not least, literary texts). We were particularly interested in how the above-defined elements contributed towards the establishment of the so-called collective identity. Literature, as a form of courtly representation, played an absolutely pivotal role in the Middle Ages. For this reason, we have tried to reflect upon the question of the circumstances under which literary works were created, in our case two texts: "Alexander" or "Alexander-Anhang" (Appendix) by Ulrich of Etzenbach and "Tristan" by Henry of Freiberg, and also on the question to what extent the life stories of these extremely interesting noblemen could have influenced the ambition to influence the form of a literary work. It is apparent to us that a certain amount of speculation is unavoidable in this question. We
have also attempted to critically revise the dating of those texts in the light of recent findings. Although the fates of Boresch and Raymund were quite different, one common denominator could be found. Their relationship, or rather the relationship of the representatives of their family to the monarch, was rather complicated. This partially accounts for the fact that the fate of Boresch and his family is full of twists and turns and unfavourable circumstances. Both Boresch and Raymund belonged to roughly the same generation of the emerging upper nobility yet their lives were diametrically opposed. While Raymund firmly established himself in the environment of the monarch's court and became a holder of important offices, Boresch (III) never got to the monarch's proximity. Boresch was apparently still haunted by the treason committed against Přemysl II by his eponymous grandfather at the end of his reign. He was subsequently condemned for this. Boresch (HI) thus had to concentrate more on the rehabilitation of his family honour and estates. 161
Therefore, it seems to us that the main idea of the so-called Appendix to Alexander, which is completely outside the previous literary tradition, could reflect a kind of wishful thinking, a kind of manual for the functioning of the relationship between the monarch and the higher nobility, which is based on diplomatic negotiations and eliminates the role of power and violence. It is possible that such a perspective reflected an effort to rehabilitate a family whose loyalty to the monarch was questionable and whose reputation was unflattering at the time. In the case of Raymund, we are unable to support the main ideological shift from tradition, or the utter condemnation of the love between Tristan and Isolde and the call for an inclination towards non-secular love, with biographical data. It is not clear whether this is an intervention of the patron in the form of the work or an arbitrary interpretive shift by Henry or not. We do not know whether the motives were personal, or whether the author was responding to a contemporary trend, as mentioned above. The final section was devoted to the Sternbergs and their family legend, which (in a significantly altered form) has survived to the present day. Using the 13th century Hungarian charters as an example, we have shown that the stories that were told in a courtly setting did not only take the form of sophisticated literary works. At the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries, chivalry was still firmly linked to the warrior ethos and, therefore, stories of heroic deeds, both ones own and those of one's ancestors, formed an
important element of personal and familial presentation. Although the heroic ancestor of the Sternbergs, who saved the whole of Christian Europe from the pagan yoke in the vicinity of Olomouc, appears in written form for the first time only after the mid-14th century, it is evident that it has deeper roots. Thus, at the court of Wenceslas II, in addition to the recitation of Tristan, there were tales of the brave deeds of the ancestors of noble courtiers, among which the Sternberg one probably stood out the most. It is part of the work of historians and historians of literature alike to seek the limits of human knowledge. In our research we have come across questions that have no clear answer. Nevertheless, we hope that the book you hold in your hands will be appreciated both the professionals and the general public. 162 |
