Cette perspective sera reprise à la Renaissance avec Giorgio Vasari, auteur des Vies d'artistes, et prédominera dans l'histoire de l'art jusqu'au XVIIIe siècle. Ainsi, les anecdotes fameuses, "Apelle et le cordonnier", "L'Hélène de Zeuxis", "La jeune fille de Corinthe", etc., inspireront les artistes comme les théoriciens de l'art. Cet ouvrage porte sur les anecdotes relatives aux uvres et aux artistes - peintres, sculpteurs et, dans une moindre mesure, architectes, présentes dans le vaste panorama des connaissances qu'est l'Histoire naturelle, écrite au ler siècle de notre ère. Comment Pline l'Ancien s'approprie-t-il ce matériau important dans la littérature artistique grecque et l'intègre-t-il dans un discours ancré dans la Rome impériale, au service d'une certaine vision de la culture gréco-romaine ? Ces questions touchent à la fois à la réception de la culture grecque dans le monde romain, à la formation d'une identité culturelle romaine et à la constitution d'un discours sur l'art au sein d'une uvre à forte finalité morale et politique. Ces questions touchent à la fois à la réception de la culture grecque dans le monde romain, à la formation d'une identité culturelle romaine et à la constitution d'un discours sur l'art au sein d'une uvre à forte finalité morale et politique.
