Drawing on examples from a wide range of states and empires, the volume looks into recruitment strategies and cryptography, highlights processes of professionalization and traces the reputation of spies ranging from the >honourablevillain<. Spionage und geheimdienstliches Wirken sind Themen, die nicht zuletzt seit der NSA-Affäre in den Fokus des öffentlichen Interesses gerückt sind. Diskussionen bewegen sich heute im Spannungsfeld nötiger Abwehr von Angriffen und unkontrollierten Praktiken der Überwachung. Diskussionen um Spionage sind jedoch so alt wie Spionagesysteme selbst und reichen weit in die Antike zurück. Das Buch zeigt, dass das Ausspionieren von Feind und Freund auf unterschiedlichen Ebenen auch in der Frühen Neuzeit eine gängige Praxis war und sich in geopolitischimperialen Entscheidungsprozessen vielfach als entscheidendes Element erwies.
