Zusammenfassung: | "This Norton Critical Edition of Antigone offers a new translation of Sophocles' tragedy, first produced in Athens in the 440's BCE. Dramatizing an episode from the well-known Theban legend, the play depicts the devastating conflict between Antigone and her uncle Creon, the new ruler of Thebes, over the right to burial of her brother Polyneices, a member of the royal family who has turned against the city and attacked it by force. The play is accompanied by an Introduction and annotations by the editor and translator, Sheila Murnaghan. The "Contexts" section provides cultural background for the text, as well as responses by distinguished modern thinkers. The essays in the "Criticism" section analyze the play from a variety of perspectives, with attention to its portrayal of gender relations, its relationship to classical Athenian political institutions, and its ongoing cultural impact through multiple modern adaptations. The volume concludes with a chronology of Sophocles' life and career and a selected bibliography." |
