Zusammenfassung: | Twenty years on from the dramatic events that led to the opening of the Berlin Wall and the collapse of the GDR, the subjective dimension of German unification is still far from complete. The nature of the East German state remains a matter of cultural as well as political debate. This volume of new research focuses on competing memories of the GDR and the ways they have evolved in the mass media, literature, and film since 1989-90. Taking as its point of departure the impact of iconic visual images of the fall of the Wall on our understanding of the historical GDR, the volume first considers the decade of cultural conflict that followed unification and then the emergence of a more complex and diverse "textual memory" of the GDR since the Berlin Republic was established in 1999. It highlights competing generational perspectives on the GDR era and the unexpected "afterlife" of the GDR in recent publications. The volume as a whole shows the vitality of eastern German culture two decades after the demise of the GDR and the centrality of these memory debates to the success of Germany's unification process |

The volume as a whole shows the vitality of eastern German culture two decades after the demise of the GDR and the centrality of these memory debates to the success of Germany's unification process Geschichte 1990-2009 gnd rswk-swf Collective memory / Germany / Congresses Popular culture / Germany / Congresses German prose literature / 20th century / History and criticism / Congresses German prose literature / 21st century / History and criticism / Congresses Literature and history / Germany / History / 20th century / Congresses Literature and history / Germany / History / 21st century / Congresses Kollektives Gedächtnis (DE-588)4200793-8 gnd rswk-swf Kultur (DE-588)4125698-0 gnd rswk-swf Germany (East) / In popular culture / Congresses Germany (East) / In literature / Congresses Germany (East) / In motion pictures / Congresses Germany / In literature / Congresses Deutschland DDR (DE-588)4011890-3 gnd rswk-swf Deutschland (DE-588)4011882-4 gnd rswk-swf (DE-588)1071861417 Konferenzschrift 2009 Bath gnd-content Deutschland (DE-588)4011882-4 g Kultur (DE-588)4125698-0 s Kollektives Gedächtnis (DE-588)4200793-8 s Deutschland DDR (DE-588)4011890-3 g Geschichte 1990-2009 z DE-604 Rechtien, Renate 1955- (DE-588)138346984 edt Tate, Dennis 1946- (DE-588)136198430 edt Erscheint auch als Druck-Ausgabe 978-1-57113-503-2 https://doi.org/10.1017/9781571137807 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext |
