Zusammenfassung: | Preliminary Material -- Introduction -- The Art Magazine -- Conversations with European Modernism -- Shirakaba and Modernism in Japan -- Revolutionary Art, Revolutionary Artists -- From the Avant-garde to the Institution -- The Legacy of Shirakaba -- Appendices -- Endnotes -- List of Characters -- Bibliography -- Index. Shirakaba and Japanese Modernism examines the most significant Japanese art and literary magazine of the early twentieth century, Shirakaba (White Birch, 1910–1923). In this volume Erin Schoneveld explores the fluid relationship that existed between different types of modern visual media, exhibition formats, and artistic practices embraced by the Shirakaba-ha (White Birch Society). Schoneveld provides a new comparative framework for understanding how the avant-garde pursuit of individuality during Japan’s Taishō period stood in opposition to state-sponsored modernism and how this played out in the emerging media of art magazines. This book analyzes key moments in modern Japanese art and intellectual history by focusing on the artists most closely affiliated with Shirakaba , including Takamura Kōtarō, Umehara Ryūzaburō, and Kishida Ryūsei, who selectively engaged with and transformed modernist idioms of individualism and self-expression to create a new artistic style that gave visual form to their own subjective reality. Drawing upon archival research that includes numerous articles, images, and exhibitions reviews from Shirakaba , as well as a complete translation of Yanagi Sōetsu’s seminal essay, "The Revolutionary Artist" ( Kakumei no gaka ), Schoneveld demonstrates that, contrary to the received narrative that posits Japanese modernism as merely derivative, the debate around modernism among Japan’s early avant-garde was lively, contested, and self-reflexive |

Drawing upon archival research that includes numerous articles, images, and exhibitions reviews from Shirakaba , as well as a complete translation of Yanagi Sōetsu’s seminal essay, "The Revolutionary Artist" ( Kakumei no gaka ), Schoneveld demonstrates that, contrary to the received narrative that posits Japanese modernism as merely derivative, the debate around modernism among Japan’s early avant-garde was lively, contested, and self-reflexive Vogeler, Heinrich 1872-1942 (DE-588)118627481 gnd rswk-swf Takamura, Kōtarō 1883-1956 (DE-588)118953419 gnd rswk-swf Rodin, Auguste 1840-1917 (DE-588)118601717 gnd rswk-swf Kishida, Ryūsei 1891-1929 (DE-588)120892944 gnd rswk-swf Umehara, Ryūzaburō 1888-1986 (DE-588)141690496 gnd rswk-swf Gogh, Vincent van 1853-1890 (DE-588)118540416 gnd rswk-swf Gauguin, Paul 1848-1903 (DE-588)118537822 gnd rswk-swf Cézanne, Paul 1839-1906 (DE-588)118519964 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte 1910-1923 gnd rswk-swf Moderne (DE-588)4039827-4 gnd rswk-swf Shirakaba-ha (DE-588)4251337-6 gnd rswk-swf Rezeption (DE-588)4049716-1 gnd rswk-swf Künstlervereinigung (DE-588)4165895-4 gnd rswk-swf Kunstzeitschrift (DE-588)4166088-2 gnd rswk-swf Japan (DE-588)4028495-5 gnd rswk-swf Takamura, Kōtarō / 1883-1956 Umehara, Ryūzaburō / 1888-1986 Kishida, Ryūsei / 1891-1929 Kishida, Ryūsei Takamura, Kōtarō Umehara, Ryūzaburō Kishida, Ryūsei - 1891-1929 Takamura, Kōtarō - 1883-1956 Umehara, Ryūzaburō - 1888-1986 Shirakaba 1900-1999 Shirakaba School Avant-garde (Aesthetics) / Japan Modernism (Art) / Japan Art, Japanese / 20th century Art, Japanese Artists Avant-garde (Aesthetics) Japanese literature Modernism (Art) Japan (DE-588)4113937-9 Hochschulschrift gnd-content Japan (DE-588)4028495-5 g Shirakaba-ha (DE-588)4251337-6 s Kunstzeitschrift (DE-588)4166088-2 s Künstlervereinigung (DE-588)4165895-4 s Moderne (DE-588)4039827-4 s Geschichte 1910-1923 z DE-604 Cézanne, Paul 1839-1906 (DE-588)118519964 p Gogh, Vincent van 1853-1890 (DE-588)118540416 p Gauguin, Paul 1848-1903 (DE-588)118537822 p Vogeler, Heinrich 1872-1942 (DE-588)118627481 p Rodin, Auguste 1840-1917 (DE-588)118601717 p Rezeption (DE-588)4049716-1 s Takamura, Kōtarō 1883-1956 (DE-588)118953419 p Umehara, Ryūzaburō 1888-1986 (DE-588)141690496 p Kishida, Ryūsei 1891-1929 (DE-588)120892944 p 9789004390607 900439060X Erscheint auch als Druck-Ausgabe 978-90-04-39060-7 http://doi.org/10.1163/9789004393639 Resolving-System Volltext https://brill.com/abstract/title/33471 Verlag Volltext X:BRILL https://doi.org/10.1163/9789004393639 Resolving-System |
