In this sweeping and ambitious work, Jonathan Sperber guides us through five decades of world history—from the end of World War Two to the dawn of the new millennium. Between the Age of Total War that preceded them and the War on Terror that followed, these decades carried expansive hopes of prosperity and peace, even as they revealed how narrow and uneven their progress. Paradoxes abound. The same era that carried in life-saving improvements in health and extended life expectancy also brought the Great Leap Forward and the Khmer Rouge, with their colossal costs in human lives. It was a Pax Americana during which the United States was almost continuously at war, cold and hot. Utopias were conceived and nightmares sometimes resulted. Moving geographically and chronologically with deftly chosen examples and incisive analysis, Sperber’s book alters our view of events with which many of us are familiar by placing them in a global context. As he shows, these years involved the rising and unstoppable flow of people, goods, capital, and ideas across boundaries, continents, and oceans, creating wealth in some parts of the world, destitution in others, increasing a sense of collective responsibility while also reinforcing nationalism and xenophobia. It was an age of transformation in every realm of human endeavor: from relations with nature to those between and among nations, superpowers to emerging states; from the forms of production to the foundations of religious faith.
