Zusammenfassung: | Jews and Judaism played a significant role in the history of the expansion of Europe to the west as well as in the history of the economic, social, and religious development of the New World. They played an important role in the discovery, colonization, and eventually exploitation of the resources of the New World. Alone among the European peoples who came to the Americas in the colonial period, Jews were dispersed throughout the hemisphere; indeed, they were the only cohesive European ethnic or religious group that lived under both Catholic and Protestant regimes, which makes their study particularly fruitful from a comparative perspective. As distinguished from other religious or ethnic minorities, the Jewish struggle was not only against an overpowering and fierce nature but also against the political regimes that ruled over the various colonies of the Americas and often looked unfavorably upon the establishment and tleration of Jewish communities in their own territory. Jews managed to survive and occasionally to flourish against all odds, and their history in the Americas is one of the more fascinating chapters in the early modern history of European expansion |

spelling | The Jews and the expansion of Europe to the West, 1450 to 1800 edited by Paolo Bernardini and Norman Fiering New York ; Oxford Berghahn Books [2001] © 2001 1 Online-Ressource (592 Seiten) txt rdacontent c rdamedia cr rdacarrier European Expansion & Global Interaction 2 Description based on online resource; title from PDF title page (publisher's Web site, viewed 04. Okt 2022) Jews and Judaism played a significant role in the history of the expansion of Europe to the west as well as in the history of the economic, social, and religious development of the New World. Jews managed to survive and occasionally to flourish against all odds, and their history in the Americas is one of the more fascinating chapters in the early modern history of European expansion In English Geschichte 1450-1800 gnd rswk-swf HISTORY / Jewish bisacsh Jews Migrations Jews Latin America History Jews North America History Juden (DE-588)4028808-0 gnd rswk-swf Auswanderung (DE-588)4003920-1 gnd rswk-swf Einwanderung (DE-588)4013960-8 gnd rswk-swf Amerika (DE-588)4001670-5 gnd rswk-swf (DE-588)4143413-4 Aufsatzsammlung gnd-content Amerika (DE-588)4001670-5 g Auswanderung (DE-588)4003920-1 s Juden (DE-588)4028808-0 s Geschichte 1450-1800 z DE-604 Einwanderung (DE-588)4013960-8 s Bernardini, Paolo 1963- Sonstige (DE-588)114095566 oth Fiering, Norman 1935- Sonstige (DE-588)132949555 oth Alberro, Solange 1938- Sonstige (DE-588)1056383267 oth Arbell, Mordechai 1929-2016 Sonstige (DE-588)1056351330 oth Böhm, Günter 1923- Sonstige (DE-588)105625095X oth Boyajian, James C. 1949- Sonstige (DE-588)171214382 oth Drescher, Seymour 1934- Sonstige (DE-588)170270920 oth Efron, Noah J. 1959- Sonstige (DE-588)129970891 oth Emmer, P.
