Summary:The violinist Joshua Bell and the conductor Sakari Oramo join forces with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra during the gala concert of the Nobel Prize Competition in 2010. On May 2010, medici.tv live-broadcasted this concert given on the award ceromony of the Nobel Prize in 2010. Including works by Beethoven, Tchaikovsky and Sibelius, this recording is now available on medici.tv's catalogue! The Finnish conductor Sakari Oramo opens this programme with Beethoven's Overture Leonore No. 3, Op. 72a. Beethoven composed only one opera, Fidelio (Leonore's other name), but he revised his work several times. As such, there are four different versions of the overture. The fourth one, know as Overture to Fidelio is the one usually performed when the opera is produced in its full-length. Yet the third one, performed here by Sakari Oramo, is assuredly the most popular and the most typical of Beethoven's style. Composed in March and April 1878, Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto in D Major, Op. 35 is one of the most popular concertos of the classical repertoire. Divided in three movements, this concerto combines a classic shape with a Romantic ethos. The concerto is here performed by Joshua Bell, the American violinist who was nicknamed the "poet of the violin." To conclude the concert, the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Sakari Oramo performs Sibelius's Symphony No. 5 in E-flat Major, Op. 82. Composed in 1914 and revised in 1916 and in 1919, this symphony was written during one of the darkest times in the European history, yet it shows a certain optimism, as the composer himself confessed in his diary
