Nelson Freire took a long time to come out of relative anonymity to occupy his rightful place: one of the leading positions in the firmament of masters of the piano. Today, he is considered to be the equal of Martha Argerich, his longstanding friend: they met in Vienna when they were sixteen and since then they have played together pieces for four hands or two pianos on all the stages of the world. But it is alone that we see him perform at the Verbier Festival in 2007. The programme provides an opportunity to appreciate all the subtlety of his playing: a piece by Bach transcribed by Busoni which is both restrained and majestic, Beethoven's Waldstein Sonata, striking because of its fluidity and its brio whilst shining with an inner light and Debussy's Children's Corner infused with poetry and delicacy.
