Zusammenfassung: | "This timely history tells the story of how 'gender' was invented in American medicine. The concept of gender shifted from a pragmatic tool in the sex assignment of children with intersex traits in the 1950s to an essential category in clinics for transgender patients in the 1960s, to a feature of feminist debates about the sex/gender binary in the 1970s, to the word we know today. Our current idea of gender might not map exactly onto these earlier formulations, but we still live with the legacy of this genealogy. Sandra Eder reveals that there was-without a doubt- something new, transformative, and enduring about the concept of gender that developed through clinical practices at pediatric endocrinology clinics. The history of gender laid out in this book shows that these ideas held no single, unified meaning-neither within the clinic nor outside it-and that 'gender' was shaped by the behaviors and needs of those who used and adapted it. This is not a neat and tidy story about the introduction of a liberating concept. Nor does this book simply focus on the development of a medical regime that subjected intersex infants to irreversible genital surgery. Rather, How the Clinic Made Gender explores the shifting landscapes of discussion about sex, gender, and sexuality in modern US history. The process by which ideas about gender became medicalized, enforced, and popularized was messy, and how gender came to be understood and applied through the treatment of patients with intersex traits was fraught and contested. This book is about the intricate ways in which the most intimate of ideas were put into practice in medicine and how those clinical practices, in turn, have informed our ideas about gender to this day"-- |

An eye-opening exploration of the medical origins of gender in modern US history. Today, a world without gender is hard to imagine. Gender is at the center of contentious political and social debates, shapes policy decisions, and informs our everyday lives. Its origins in clinical practice, however, are lesser known. This W book tells the story of the invention of gender in American 1 medicine, detailing how it was shaped by mid-twentieth-century American notions of culture, personality, and social engineering. Sandra Eder uncovers how the concept of gender changed from a pragmatic tool in the sex assignment of children with intersex traits in the 1950s to an essential category in clinics for transgender individuals in the 1960s. Following gender outside the clinic, she then reconstructs the variable ways feminists integrated gender into their theories and practices in the 1970s. The emergence of the sex/gender binary, a transformative idea, developed out of medical practice in the context of wider social norms that informed the attitudes of physicians and researchers. In Eder s hands, we see how ideas like gender can take on a life of their own and may be used to question the very assumptions on which they were based. Illuminating and deeply researched, this book closes a notable gap in the history of gender and will advance current debates on the relationship between social norms and medical practice.

This book is about the intricate ways in which the most intimate of ideas were put into practice in medicine and how those clinical practices, in turn, have informed our ideas about gender to this day"-- Geschichte 1950-2022 gnd rswk-swf Konstruktion (DE-588)4032231-2 gnd rswk-swf Transgender (DE-588)7619945-9 gnd rswk-swf Geschlechtsidentität (DE-588)4181116-1 gnd rswk-swf Medizin (DE-588)4038243-6 gnd rswk-swf Intersexualität (DE-588)4027484-6 gnd rswk-swf Geschlechtsmerkmal (DE-588)4157013-3 gnd rswk-swf USA (DE-588)4078704-7 gnd rswk-swf Gender identity / United States Intersex people / United States Medicine / United States / History USA (DE-588)4078704-7 g Medizin (DE-588)4038243-6 s Geschlechtsmerkmal (DE-588)4157013-3 s Geschlechtsidentität (DE-588)4181116-1 s Konstruktion (DE-588)4032231-2 s Intersexualität (DE-588)4027484-6 s Transgender (DE-588)7619945-9 s Geschichte 1950-2022 z DE-604 Erscheint auch als Online-Ausgabe 978-0-226-57346-5 Digitalisierung UB Augsburg - ADAM Catalogue Enrichment application/pdf http://bvbr.bib-bvb.de:8991/F?func=service&doc_library=BVB01&local_base=BVB01&doc_number=033599950&sequence=000001&line_number=0001&func_code=DB_RECORDS&service_type=MEDIA Inhaltsverzeichnis Digitalisierung UB Augsburg - ADAM Catalogue Enrichment application/pdf http://bvbr.bib-bvb.de:8991/F?func=service&doc_library=BVB01&local_base=BVB01&doc_number=033599950&sequence=000003&line_number=0002&func_code=DB_RECORDS&service_type=MEDIA Klappentext |
