Summary:The case study provides an overview of coastal tourism in the Azores and the probable future impacts of climate change on the islands. It summarizes the findings of a recent study undertaken by an international team of experts, including the authors, to determine how serious the impacts are, in particular on tourism. It considers these effects in the light of European and worldwide climate change mitigation policies. In particular, it raises a fundamental challenge for island destinations such as the Azores. Their economies are dependent on tourism and their tourism is dependent on air travel, which is undoubtedly one of the most damaging factors in terms of carbon emissions
