SUMMARY Sites of the ancient decorative painting of the Cimmerian Bosporus (region of what is now the Kerch Strait) are among the pearls left for us by the Classic culture in the northern littoral of the Black Sea. Their comprehensive study is an urgent task of the national and world archaeological science. It is exactly these sites that allow us to estimate in the full completeness the peculiarity of the evolution of the ancient culture in the northern Black Sea region, its adaptation to the local artistic tastes while retaining the fundamental traditions. Painting decorated not only the walls of rich Bosporan houses but also the walls of tombs and sarcophagi. These burial structures are of principal importance for studies of the religious notions of the Bosporan population, their ideas on the other world awaiting people beyond the death threshold. The present publication is devoted to problems of the studies and recording of the ancient decora tive painting of Cimmerian Bosporus in the 19th — early 20th century. All the sections of the monograph are based completely on analysis of the unique complex of sources for studies of ancient painting in the south of Russia from the collections of the Scientific Archives of the Institute for the History of Material Culture RAS. The first section deals with the history of creation of the fundamental work ‘Ancient decorative paint ing in the South ofRussia’ by M. I. Rostovtsev. This publication saw light more than 100 years ago but is still of very great importance for the modern science. The author initiated this work after his
sound acquaint ance with Pompeian antiquities. Taking an interest in the paintings of Bosporan tombs, M. I. Rostovtsev started in 1905 investigations of them on location. In these studies, he was completely supported by the Imperial Archaeological Commission which financed and furthered in the necessary directions the excavations of the Kerch Museum directed by V. V. Shkorpil. An important contribution to the success ful completion of this huge work was made by M. V. Farmakovskiy, as well as the Kerch photographers M. S. Rubanchik, E. F. Keppel et al. who copied painting in many tombs. In the second section, the history of discovery and investigations of the painted tombs of Bosporus is considered. The so-called Stasov tomb is one of the most famous painted crypts among them. Materials from the Scientific Archives of IHMC RAS have enabled us to reconstruct stage by stage the history of its studies. The tomb was discovered by chance in 1872 in Kerch. Immediately after its discovery, this monument was investigated by the assistant director of the Kerch Museum F. I. Gross. He made life-size drawings from the representations inside the crypt. The present whereabouts of these illustrations are unknown. In 1873, this monument was studied by the art historian V. V. Stasov. After that, the tomb was buried in earth and blocked with stone blocks. For 26 years, its location remained unknown. The Stasov tomb was rediscovered during a visit of the president of the Imperial Archaeological Commission Count A. A. Bobrinskiy to Kerch in 1899. Later new copies and the first photographs of
the paintings in the tomb were made. These documents are housed now in the archives of IHMC RAS. The painted crypt of Sorakos discovered in 1890 in Kerch is of great scientific interest. It is dated to the period from the late 2nd to the 1st half of the 3rd century AD. Here all the archive documents con cerned with excavations of this tomb are presented, viz. reports of F. I. Gross and Yu. A. Kulakovskiy, copies of the paintings made by F. I. Gross and Yu. M. Vasilyeva, photographs by M. S. Rubanchik and Ya. I. Smirnov. Analysis of the ornamental system of the tomb suggests that, firstly, it creates an image of some magical, flowering and fragrant world. Secondly, the figured representations represent a picture connected with an entire system of notions of the Bosporan citizens about the other world: the hard travel of the soul of the deceased, bodily resurrection and meeting with the Great Goddess in the kingdom of the eternal beatitude. Ancient Kytaion was one of the smaller cities of the Bosporan Kingdom. Its archaeological inves tigations were started in 1925. In 1928, in the course of excavations of the necropolis, a catacomb was uncovered where the walls were stuccoed and ornamented with a painting in blue and red. Analysis of the painting and burial goods suggested that the interments in the tomb were practiced from the 2nd to the 4th century AD. In 1929, yet another painted tomb was discovered in the area of the necropolis. In the
Summary 245 western niche of the funerary chamber it contained a representation of a sailing vessel. Interpretation of the painting in terms of the Christian symbolic enables us to date the tomb to the 4th century AD. In the third section, the history and peculiarities of the formation of illustrative graphic and photo graphic collections during the archaeological investigations in the pre-revolution period are presented. The largest collection of photos and negatives recording archaeological investigations is now kept in the archives of the Institute for the History of Material Culture RAS in Saint Petersburg. Their analysis ena bles us to trace the history of photo-recording of monuments of the Bosporan archaeology at its initial stage. Reports of the curators of the Kerch Museum of Antiquities were provided with photographs since 1861. Initially, only the finds were photographed, the first photos recording the very process of investiga tion were taken by the 1870s. From the 1890s the employment of photo-recording in the Kerch archaeo logy considerably expanded. In the photographic works, local photographers M. S. Rubanchik, brothers Reznikovs, E. E Keppel, L. R. Bernshtein and others were involved. The illustrative materials comprise also watercolours, drawings, plans, photographs recording con struction of the crypts, the situation of the paintings, general plans of the interiors and details of the painting. These documents mostly include large-format representations and photographic collections of the Imperial Archaeological Commission (IAC), Academy of the
History of Material Culture, the per sonal collection of the president of IAC A. A. Bobrinskiy and private collections of M. I. Rostovtsev, Ya. I. Smirnov, N. I. Repnikov. In different times, copies of the Bosporan paintings were executed by M. V. Farmakovskiy, F. I. Gross, Yu. M. Vasilyeva, R Ridiger, O. Zorin, A. D. Rayevskiy, V. Golov, S. P. Ukraintsev et al. The corpus of representations was considerably expanded in the course of prepara tion of the work by M. I. Rostovtsev because many drawings and photos then still remained unpublished. This brief review is supplemented with complete lists of the graphic and photographic archive materials representing Bosporan paintings and excerptions from some of the documents. The Conclusive part is constituted by an album of illustrations. Translated by A. Gilevich |
