This essay examines an altogether different category: the theology of architecture. Its argument addresses concerns presented by the theologian Paul Tillich and by the architectural critic Colin Rowe. In 1964 Tillich gave a public address at the Museum of Modern Art, in which he called attention to how the sacred may be encountered within architecture as an extension of theological language itself. In 1979, on the occasion of the publication of Collage City, Rowe delivered a lecture that adopted the language of theology to articulate a critique of modern architecture. Both argued, albeit using different registers, that modernity’s architectural knowledge cannot be contained within familiar boundaries, but must instead be pursued through categories that transcend predictable boundaries between architecture’s material and immaterial concerns." |
