SUMMARY It is more important to know what sort of person has a disease than to know what sort of disease a person has. Hippocrates The search for the origins, causes and possible remedies of diseases in the medical world almost resembles the legendary quest for El Dorado treasure. Here, it is a metaphor to denote seeking things that do not exist, instead of a place where great wealth can be accessed quickly and effortlessly. It does not matter in what figurative sense the past thoughts of medical researchers are understood and interpreted, the permanence resides in the assigned vector, and the pursuit continues — not to attain the moment of wealth and fame — the keywords here are “search” and “pursuit”. Over the last two centuries, medicine has evolved with incredible speed, and the amount of new knowledge is growing at a dizzying rate, making it impossible to track the discoveries and tested innovations even in a limited area. In medicine, is also inconceivable due to the overload of work upon doctors, and in many countries, this is certainly not facilitated by the insufficient public prestige of medical professions. Yet the search continues, even though we no longer seek the magical water that grants eternal life, nor “the stone of philosophers”, nor any other universal miracle cure. Doctors in the early 19th century, including Samuel Hahnemann and Franz Anton Mesmer did not believe in any of this either, but they were convinced that the medical practice of the time could be improved, and trusted that a man himself had a far greater capacity than that which could be
researched by traditional methods. Both doctors were seekers by nature and relentlessly followed their thorny path, at times disregarding the views and opinions of others. Thus, they could come up with new doctrines, which were thought through in detail and formulated as separate paragraphs (aphorisms). The ideas of both distinguished doctors during the 19th century were recognised only in part, while in the 20th century their conclusions were equated with pseudoscience. Undoubtedly, we can apply this term regarding almost all the research that has been carried out 30-50 years ago, from the today’s perspective pointing to the lack of evidence or outdated research 286

Therefore, it is self-evident that we also attribute the same considerations to older works, frequently denoting the theories put forward earlier by the name of their authors, and not always in the kindest of terms. Quite possibly, critics are right, it may be true that a significant part of this work has depreciated over time, nevertheless, the criticism thereof should be based on sound knowledge of this work. The current book contributes to building this knowledge in Latvian language, and in the future it may serve as a basis for informed discussion, support or rejection, which draws on the main sources, enabling well-considered and evidence-based opinions. These researchers and their work today are designated with a figurative stamp of rejection, yet mostly undeservedly. If this edition helps the contemporary doctors to get acquainted with the early sources, to grasp the spirit of arduous research, consuming ideas and transfer of experience, then this book will have lived up to its goal. 287 |
