Summary:This course will discuss the design and control of the Reluctance Machines. With the recent spike in the cost of permanent magnets, there has been a surge in rare-earth alternative machines topologies. This motor is robust and requires low maintenance. However it has historically been credited with issues of high torque ripple, acoustic noise and vibration. However in response to these challenges, there have been several advancements in the design and control of the machine, which will also be explored. Topics covered include: Introduction to the concept of Reluctance; Inductance profile and Torque generation in Switched Reluctance Motor; Torque Speed Characteristics; Converters used in SRM control and Advancements in Reluctance Machines: Machine topologies and Control
