Item Description:The book reconstructs the events surrounding different violations of the tomb in which Francesco Petrarca (1304-1374) is buried. The first reported violation, by the Dominican friar Tommaso Martinelli, took place in 1630; two centuries later, the Paduan scholar and patron Carlo Leoni (1812-1874) is reputed to have stolen Petrarch's skull, replacing it with the skull of a woman who had lived 100 years earlier. The theft was documented in 2004 by an anatomopathologist from the University of Padua, when the tomb was reopened for the purpose of scientific research. The tomb can be found in the town of Arquà Petrarca, near Padua (Veneto). - Includes bibliographical references (pages 131-139)
