These are the questions, which were discussed in a conference organised by the Federal Institute for Vocational Education and the German Youth Institute and which are addressed in the anthology on hand. Der Sammelband versteht sich als Beitrag zu einer stärkeren Verbindung von Jugend- und Bildungsforschung. Das Duale System hat eine Integrationsfunktion besonders für benachteiligte Jugendliche, sowohl in beruflicher als auch sozialer Hinsicht. Diese Integrationsfunktion unterliegt Änderungen, hervorgerufen durch den demografischen Wandel, den Fachkräftemangel und Veränderungen bei den Ausbildungsprozessen.
