ANNOTATION Book title: Free and equal - 33 years of efforts to protect human rights in the Czech Republic The Czech Helsiński Committee - its history, current work and its mission. Editors: Mikuláš Vymetal and Lucie Rybooá The first book about the Czech Helsiński Committee, a non governmental or ganisation for human rights. The book is devided into several parts. The foreword and introduction to the field of human rights is written by Ivan Štampach, who is a long-term member and the vice-chair of the Czech Helsiń ski Committee (CHC) and also recognised expert for religionist issues. The second part contains interviews with some of the most important person alities like Václav Malý, Václav Pavlíček, Anna Šabatová, Petr Uhl, Jiřina Šiklová, Táňa Fischerova and Lucie Rybová, who significantly contributed to the work of this unique organisation, that follows up the activities of Charter 77 since 1990 as the registered civil society organisation. In the book you can also find personal experience speeches about the role of the Czech Helsinki Committee in the past and today made by current board members ֊ Vaclav Vlk, Ivan Štampach, Dana Syslová, Jan Beer and Selma Muhich. The interviews are made by Mikuláš Vymetal, the pastor and current member of the board of the CHC.
The third part of the book is reflecting the work of this organization and its team since 1988 when the idea to set up such organisation was born. You can read about main human rights efforts and statements which were specifically made to improve the situation of various vulnerable groups such as are un voluntary sterilized Roma women, refugees, In China persecuted and tortured members of Falun Gong and Uygur minority etc., Some important human rights cases monitored and supported by CHC are remembered too: the case of protracted process and unjust accusation of Václav Sáňka, the member of the Muslim community in the CR or the case concerning almost 80 very young Christians from China, who came in 2016 to the CR to seek asylum and who are up to the present waiting for the protection. The fourth part of the book is devoted to the present situation in the protection of human rights of the vulnerable groups monitored by the Czech Helsiński Committee - rights of women, rights of children, rights of persons deprived from liberty, rights of persons with disabilities, rights of persons with mental health and rights of elderlys. The author of the texts Is Lucie Rybová, director of the Czech Helsinki Committee and human rights lawyer. Rights of Roma, rights of LGBT persons, and issues connected with faith and religion are nicely introduced by several authors such as Alice Sigmund Heráková, Veronika Dočkalová, Radek Šoustal and Mikuláš Vymětal. In the epilogue written by Lucie Rybová, a reader can learn about which activ ities are CHC currently paying attention to - social and
legal aid to individuals, monitoring, reporting. Existing barriers to work of CHC are mentioned as well. Morover, in the book, the issue such as the current crisis, COVID 19 pandemic, and other new human rights challenges are discussed too. Lucie Rybová
