Zusammenfassung: | Perfect Harmony and Melting Strains assembles interdisciplinary essays investigating concepts of harmony during a transitional period, in which the Pythagorean notion of a harmoniously ordered cosmos competed with and was transformed by new theories about sound - and new ways of conceptualizing the world. From the perspectives of philosophy, literary scholarship, and musicology, the contributions consider music's ambivalent position between mathematical abstraction and sensibility, between the metaphysics of harmony and the physics of sound. Essays examine the late medieval and early modern history of ideas concerning the nature of music and cosmic harmony, and trace their transformations in early modern musico-literary discourses. Within this framework, essays further offer original readings of important philosophical, literary, and musicological works. This interdisciplinary volume brings into focus the transformation of a predominant Renaissance worldview and of music's scientific, theological, literary, as well as cultural conceptions and functions in the early modern period, and will be of interest to scholars of the classics, philosophy, musicology, as well as literary and cultural studies |

Apr 2021) Perfect Harmony and Melting Strains assembles interdisciplinary essays investigating concepts of harmony during a transitional period, in which the Pythagorean notion of a harmoniously ordered cosmos competed with and was transformed by new theories about sound - and new ways of conceptualizing the world. This interdisciplinary volume brings into focus the transformation of a predominant Renaissance worldview and of music's scientific, theological, literary, as well as cultural conceptions and functions in the early modern period, and will be of interest to scholars of the classics, philosophy, musicology, as well as literary and cultural studies In English Geschichte 1500-1800 gnd rswk-swf Antike /Rezeption Harmonia mundi Musiktheorie Pythagoreismus MUSIC / History & Criticism bisacsh Harmonie Musik (DE-588)4023447-2 gnd rswk-swf Wirkung (DE-588)4190021-2 gnd rswk-swf Sphärenmusik (DE-588)4124230-0 gnd rswk-swf Literatur (DE-588)4035964-5 gnd rswk-swf Medizin (DE-588)4038243-6 gnd rswk-swf Musik (DE-588)4040802-4 gnd rswk-swf Wissenschaft (DE-588)4066562-8 gnd rswk-swf Musik (DE-588)4040802-4 s Wirkung (DE-588)4190021-2 s Literatur (DE-588)4035964-5 s Medizin (DE-588)4038243-6 s Wissenschaft (DE-588)4066562-8 s DE-604 Harmonie Musik (DE-588)4023447-2 s Sphärenmusik (DE-588)4124230-0 s Geschichte 1500-1800 z Butler, Katherine ctb Gouk, Penelope ctb Keller, Wolfram R. ctb Keller, Wolfram R. edt Prins, Jacomien ctb Swanson, Barbara ctb Wilde, Cornelia ctb Wilde, Cornelia edt Erscheint auch als Druck-Ausgabe 9783110426373 https://doi.org/10.1515/9783110422061 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext |
