So begins one of the earliest extensive missionary descriptions of the Hawaiian islands and their inhabitants.Missionary Charles Stewart, during his three years' residence in Hawaii, witnessed all facets of native life. With a keen eye for detail, he recorded festivals for King Kamehameha, a visit by Liholiho, and the death and funeral of Queen Keopuolani. He provided vivid descriptions of native skills, such as surfing, and the manufacture of native cloth from bark, and he commented at length on Hawaiian lifestyle and moral attitudes.
