Zusammenfassung: | "An innovative new take on the drainage of the Fens, framed in the language of colonialism, Imperial Mud upends the classical narrative of this being a triumph of technology over nature. The final destruction of England's last lowland wilderness and the dispossession of its custodians was not a consequence of progress', but of the growing power of a centralised and militarised state. Imperial Mud reimagines not just the history of the Fens, but the history (and identity) of the English people. And in reimagining the past, it invents a new future."--Amazon.ca |

Between the English Civil Wars and the mid-1800s, the indigenous population of the Fens of eastern England fought to preserve their homeland against an expanding empire. Despite centuries of resistance, their culture and community were destroyed by enclosure and the draining of the wetlands - along with England’s last lowland wilderness. In this arresting new history, James Boyce brings to life colonial masters such as Oliver Cromwell and the Dukes of Bedford, and the defiant ‘Fennish’ themselves. We learn of eels so plentiful they became a kind of medieval currency; games of ‘Fen football’ that were often a cover for sabotage of the drainage works; and the final destruction of a bountiful ecosystem. Masterfully argued, Imperial Mud reimagines not just the history of the Fens, but that of the English people.
